Students make a splash at swimming carnival
Despite the inconvenience of a snap COVID lockdown we were eventually able to conduct our Twilight Swimming Carnival the week after it was scheduled. Although the weather was cooler and the sun set earlier, the competitive spirit was fierce and the participation rate excellent. The evening began with the Foundation children gathering to undertake novelty activities in the leisure pool followed by the Years 1and 2 children. These activities were very well supported by our families and, at times, the adults looked as though they were as excited as the children.
The action then transferred to the main outdoor pool as the School of Innovation students began their program in earnest with the time-honoured under-and-over noodle relay. Designed as a flotation device, the noodle proved to be a difficult customer when it came to the “under”part, however, the inventiveness of our students saw some creative moves being implemented.
As the progressive point tallies were announced, house members began to fill the events in an endeavour to collect as many points as possible. Some competitors even had to double up in lanes to accommodate the numbers. Our swimming carnival is intended to be a family-friendly occasion where participation and having fun are the intended goals. This could not have been more evident in the way that our Year 9 girls rallied each other to compete in as many races as possible. This sets a wonderful example to our younger students about the importance of being active and supporting school activities! Oh, and the overall points winner: Cooper House!

Adey has hoops of success on the court
School of Innovation Year 9 student Adey Steigenberger has just finished up a very successful basketball season. Adey was selected in the Shepparton Gators U16 Division 1 team. Commitments have included training two times a week and travelling each fortnight to compete against teams such as Wodonga, Bendigo and Traralgon. “It’s fun and I enjoy playing against all of the different teams”, says Adey.
Last weekend saw Adey travel to Traralgon to play Champs. This competition wraps up the season. Adey’s team won all of their games, except for one, taking the team to semi-finals. Unfortunately, a loss by only 10 points in the semis saw Adey’s team miss out on a finals place. Adey says she is sad that the season has ended but is looking forward to trying out for the Gators team again next year. Well done Adey!
