Middle School Report

Assistant Principal Report

Term 1 has been an incredible beginning to the school year. Students, Staff and the broader school community have been resilient through 2020 and with new enthusiasm and outlook, we move forward to the 2021 school year. The staff at ECSC have planned an amazing program for our middle school students this year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for the opportunities that will afford our students.

Middle School Welcome

Middle School would like to welcome all of our new families to the College whether it be as a new year 7 student starting their high school education or a new student in year 8 or 9 that has moved into Wollert. We hope the transition into ECSC has been successful and enjoyable.

The students have settled in well and we were very impressed with their ability to transition into, and back from, remote learning.  Overall, the students are happy to be back at school and in class with their friends. It is important that students attend classes on time and with resources such as devices, pens and books to write in.

We would like to remind families that students should only be wearing the sport uniform on days that they have PE or interschool sport tryouts.  Students should be wearing black leather school shoes with their summer uniform and runners, suitable for physical activity, with their sports uniform.

Year 7

Year seven students have been transitioning very well to high school here at ECSC. We were thoroughly impressed by the year sevens and their flexibility moving to remote learning so quickly throughout the snap lockdown. A huge thank you for your assistance and support with this.

Term one is focused on smoothly transitioning to high school. Students are completing new and different subjects and are slowly getting used to reading their timetables and moving to different classrooms around the school. Students have been meeting new students and making new friends, which has been great to see! We are looking forward to seeing this continue at camp Lake Dewar on March the 12th. Please see information emailed out for more information about the upcoming camp.

Below are some quotes from some of our year seven students on transitioning from primary school to high school.

“I have enjoyed making new friends and learning in a new way. A positive about high school is being able to have new teachers and subjects in different spaces around the school.”

Antonio Dellevergini

“I have enjoyed experiencing and achieving new things. Starting high school was a little stressful but it also made me grow.”

Year 8

The start of a new school year always comes with a range of emotions; excitement and the fear of the unknown. Kickstarting the year with many variables such as lockers, brand new teachers, subjects and the snap lockdown, students were required to show great resilience. Despite the challenges, students have demonstrated our school values by embracing the experiences so far. Year 8 students should be really proud of the start that they have made this term.

Students in Year 8 have been or will be a part of a new subject this year called, Community Leadership. In this subject students will have the opportunity to pioneer initiatives that aim to innovate and give back to our community. One of the first initiatives coming up this term include the KM club which will be student-run during lunchtime on the 4th of March. Additionally, students in this subject will have the opportunity to volunteer with Prep students at Edgar's Creek Primary School. All our students are excited and have demonstrated great maturity, initiative and teamwork in preparation for our primary school visits in Week 8 & 9 this term.

Here are some quotes from students involved in Community Leadership this term:

I thought this subject was going to be about leadership skills and it is, but it is way better than what I thought it would be- Angelina White

"I am excited to learn about leadership skills and also help others in our community"

Anthony Peniata

"The sessions have been related ALOT to work in the community"-

Manroop Kaur

A massive congratulations to our Year 8s so far!"

Year 9

There seems to have been a buzz of energy around the Year 9 students since the start of the new year.

The Innovations program has seen students take part in a Just Society workshop and then last week students got to listen to Glenn Manton speak about relationships, communication and what is important to us. It was great to hear so many students willing to open up and to talk about personal experiences within the group.

Students are enjoying the opportunity to learn more specialist skills within their selectives. This semester they are doing three selectives and in second semester they get to do another different three selectives. The skills they learn in these classes along with their core subjects will prepare them for senior school and their personal pathway.

Here are some comments from the students about their experiences so far-

"The selectives that they teach are advanced because of the materials and machines they use, it's just extraordinary. The new teachers are nice. The workshops organised by the school are fun and inspiring"

Sharath

"Edgars Creek Secondary College has had a great start to 2021 with the new Year 7’s and new students across the school. Students and teachers have had a great time meeting each other. The Year 9’s are enjoying their selectives so far. From movie analysis to forensic science and wood work. Despite having a short period of remote learning the majority of students are are engaged in the work. The Year 9’s have had someone come to the College two weeks in a row to speak to them and sometimes do activities or give them support. On Thursday 25th of February we had Glenn Manton come and talk to us. He talked about how he has succeeded in life, his achievements and the book he has written."

Anastasia

"I enjoy having guest speakers come in so we can learn about them and their story."
