Major Facilities projects – coming soon
Our plans for three major facilities projects have recently received approval from the Department of Education which is very exciting news.
Each of these projects involves improvements to outdoor teaching and recreation spaces.
The first is the construction of a Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA) over the soccer pitch on the oval. The COLA will provide an all-weather area for PE classes, sports training, lunchtime recreation, and year level assemblies and events. It will be a fabulous addition to our facilities.
Once the COLA is installed, the soccer pitch will be replaced with a new pitch which will include line markings for multiple sports. Volleyball is rapidly growing in popularity, so several courts will be installed.
The third project is the redevelopment of the area between the Gym and Nindethana to create a landscaped learning area and performance space, as well as an area for special events and BBQs.
I look forward to keeping you updated with photos as the 3 projects progress. We expect them to be completed by early September.
Swimming Carnival
On Tuesday 9 March, Years 7 to 9 and selected Years 10 to 12 students travelled to Oak Park Aquatic Centre for our annual Swimming Carnival. It was a well attended event with many students participating in the events and making use of the giant waterslide and large floating obstacle course during supervised free time. There was enthusiastic competition in the swimming and novelty events, and a lot of house pride was on display. You can read more about the Swimming Carnival in the special report later in this newsletter.
Well done to all participants, and to Irwin House for being named the overall winner. Thanks to Mr Lakovski and his team for the organisation of this very successful event.

Western Chances Scholarships
The annual Western Chances Scholarships Awards Ceremony was held at Deakin Edge Theatre at Federation Square on Thursday 11 March. Of the 208 new scholarships awarded, St Albans Secondary College students obtained more than 30. Several SASC students represented the school at the ceremony in front of a large crowd and a huge online audience of more than two thousand. Thanks to Ms Louise Bryant who attended on behalf of the school and also to Ms Peta Burgess who oversees the program and encourages and supports the applications for these scholarships.
It is wonderful to see so many of our students acknowledged for their outstanding academic performance across many areas of the curriculum. The ceremony was also very moving and inspiring, and demonstrated the power of education. It was viewed online by students, parents and staff who were unable to attend the ceremony.
Congratulations to all those who were awarded a 2021 scholarship. We thank the staff who generously gave up their time to complete the associated paperwork and to nominate students or complete renewal applications. This is genuinely appreciated.
