Year 9 Advance

Advance is a school-based program that encourages participants to get actively involved in the local community and complete recognised training. As part of this exciting program students complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (Dukes Award). The Dukes Award comprises of four sections: Community Service, Skills, Physical Recreation & Adventurous Journey.
The program helps us learn more about the world and gives us a chance to explore and get out of our comfort zones. It helps us learn about our community and environment and gives us the opportunity to expand on our interests and hobbies.
On the 8 February, the 2021 Year 9 Advance class left for Lady Northcote Recreation Camp. We stayed for two nights and participated in a wide range of activities such as canoeing, archery, sports and teamwork games that helped us to develop our teamwork skills. We watched movies as a class and played card games together each night. This camp provided a great opportunity for the students and teachers to get to know each other well. New friendships were made and we all had a lot of fun! We would also like to thank Mr Winduss for his support on the camp.
First Aid Training
On Thursday the 25 of February, the Year 9 Advance class completed First Aid training with Darren Schreck, a first aid educator. The activities were interactive and informative and covered emergency response actions, anaphylaxis, asthma, choking, strokes, bleeding and insect/snake bites. We used practice defibrillators and practiced our CPR skills on dummies.
All students received a First Aid Certificate:
- Provide basic emergency life support
- Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
The course was very interesting and an important lesson that could potentially come in handy one day!
Clean Up Australia Day
On Tuesday the 16 March, the Year 9 Advance class participated in Clean Up Australia Day, which contributed to their community service for the Dukes Award. We worked as a team to help clean up the local area, which included the Errington Reserve Children’s playground. We kept each other motivated by competing in teams to collect the most rubbish and recycling. It was very rewarding knowing we were helping our community. We would also like to thank Ms Mortimer for her support and on the excursion.
