Grade 1 Fortnightly Snapshot - Week 8 & 9
March 18 2021
As first term comes to a close and Easter holidays and chocolates are in our sights, we would like to celebrate the strong teaching and learning in Grade 1.

This Snapshot will give you an outline of what your child will have learnt in the subject areas in the last week and will learn in the week ahead. We also aim to provide you with any videos or explanations you may need to practise certain skills such as the 'codes'.
Reading
Students are enjoying the decodable books they are taking home to read with you each night as well as the picture books that you are reading to them. It is an expectation that students read their decodable books each night with you and record the title in their planners.

This week students have been making predictions using clues from the book. They are then checking their predictions by using the text to confirm.

Next week students will look at the features of fiction texts as well as the connections they can make.
Writing

In writing this week students have been have been revising the four types of sentences - statements, questions, exclamations and commands. They have had lots of fun creating these sentence types and using the correct punctuation to match the sentence.
Next week students will be learning to use conjunctions in their sentences.
Word Work
Students are continuing to revise the codes they learnt in Prep as well as adding new codes to their classroom working pack each week. Below is a PDF of the first 40 codes if you would like to continue revising these at homes. If you click on the code they will play the sounds each one makes.
Next week students will learn Rule 2 - C will say its second sound 's' if followed by an e i or y.

Handwriting and letter formation is also a focus during these boot camp sessions. This year at BPS we are trialing print instead of Victorian Modern Cursive.
Below you will find the handwriting script and the codes for your own use at home.
Last week students learnt to model and order numbers using a range of materials.

This week students have learnt about the features and uses of a number line. They loved playing the warm up game 'Sam Yew Gew', where they replaced a 3 or 7 with a clap.
Students created a number line to 100 and played 'Race to 100'.

Next week students will be learning about time and time durations.
This week students did a great job of completing a summative assessment for the Unit of Inquiry 'Who We Are'. Students were asked to show all they had learnt about how choices affect their health.
Next week students will start a new unit of inquiry 'How we Express Ourselves' with the central idea 'Stories communicate cultural identity and values'.
Wellbeing

This week students explored why we need friends and how to start and keep a friendship. Next week they will be learning about different points of view.
