Primary Big Write Day

Thursday is always our day for Big Write at St Edward's. This is an opportunity where students are able to showcase their fantastic writing skills in a supported classroom environment. Students aim to use ambitious vocabulary, sophisticated openers and connectives, and accurate punctuation to enhance their writing. These components are visible in all our classrooms and are displayed on our V.C.O.P. walls.

A fundamental principle of writing for children is that if a child can't say it, then they can't write it. With that in mind, the school send home a 'Home Talk' sheet on the day before each Big Write. This is an excellent opportunity for the student to consolidate their ideas verbally by having a conversation with a family member around what they have planned for their writing at school the next day. If the 'Home Talk sheet' is misplaced on its way home, this can also be found in digital form via the Compass app.

This week for Big Write at the Primary campus,

  • Year 3 completed an imaginative story about a journey into space:
  • Year 4 imagined being stuck on an island with an erupting volcano:
  • Year 5 wrote a fictional narrative titled "The Big Race":
  • Year 6 engaged their senses to write a narrative about a ‘Hottest Chilli Challenge’ inspired by their class novel ‘Thai-riffic’. Lengy, the main character’s family, owns a Thai restaurant therefore; the narrative is full of tantalising descriptions of food! With that in mind, and with the help of Mrs Short, the students were able to taste her delicious curry (with added chilli sauce for the brave) and use this experience to enhance their writing!

Please ask your child about their Big Write when they get home today to find out about all of the great work that was completed. If your child is in an Infants grades, they will be completing their Big Write next week.
