Prep - Year 2

Assistant Principal's Report

Scott McKinnon

Hello parents.  What a fantastic last few weeks it has been at the Springs.  So let's get to it and see what has been happening in classrooms...

In Prep, students have continued to learn important skills such as sharing, taking turns and developing relationships in purposeful play.  They have focussed on the letters m, s, f, a, p, t and j and have enjoyed sounding out activities and crafts to help them in their reading journey.  In Writing, our preppies have been busy sharing their ideas and stretching out sounds in words to record their thinking.  They've enjoyed a playground language experience where they were allowed time to practise climbing and balancing before describing what had occurred and noting sounds they can hear in those words.  In Mathematics, students are continuing to identify the features of two-dimensional shapes.  They have also continued to read, write and order numbers based on their size.

In Year 1, students have been learning to identify the different parts of a story - the beginning, middle, end, characters, settings, problems and solutions.  They have also been working to describe character traits and use critical thinking to share their opinions.  In Writing, they have been publishing their recounts, ensuring that the 5 W's- who, what, when, why and when have been included in their drafts.

In Mathematics, they are focussing on counting and ordering numbers up to 120, including from different starting points.  Students have also been learning to identify the features of two-dimensional shapes including hexagons, octagons and pentagons.

Our Year 2 students have been learning to make connections when reading, through comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences between characters, words and illustrations.  They are learning to identify the parts of sentences, such as nouns and verbs and are using adjectives in their writing to provide description and detail.

In Mathematics, students have been learning to partition 3-digit numbers into place value and they have been creating picture graphs to use, read and analyse data.

A big thank you to all families for helping their child with their reader each night.  We can't express enough the importance of reading at home to help develop your child's literacy skills.  Look out for home phonics books that are also travelling in our Year 1's reader bags so they can practise heart words and focussed sounds.  Our Year 2 students will begin to receive additional homework from next Friday.

Thanks for reading and have a lovely long weekend everyone.

Regards
