Adjusting to Change

We all respond to change differently: and this is even more evident when it hits us without warning. Understandably this  can be daunting. When our plans are thwarted, it is quite reasonable to feel a certain level of frustration. There is no hard and fast rule on how to embrace change but learning to accept  it helps us navigate through the uncertainty.

Understand the emotional stages of change  Change need not be chaotic or confusing.  Look for the light at the end of the tunnel and the benefits of the change.

Keep things in perspective Learn to keep things in proper perspective in order to  help reduce distraction and mitigate emotional responses. Focus on the “here and now” of your life.

Have a purpose  Keep your values and goals in sight,  these are the things that give meaning and purpose to our life.

Be flexible and positive and stay motived  Positivity goes a long way. Expect that things will not always move in a straight line. More likely, things will unfold in a “start and stop” fashion.

Learn patience (easier said than done!)  It is important to be responsive rather than  reactionary. Put simply, don’t be impulsive. Patience will help you arrive at the best possible outcome.

Be persistent  Change is both  complex and multi-layered. It takes time and effort before all the pieces fall into place. Although the urge to give up is strong at times, it is important not to hang in there.

Stay practical  Maintain balance and create a  structure that provides stability and support while you’re in the process of transitioning.
