SUSTAINABILITY AT FRANKSTON HIGH SCHOOL

At the heart of Frankston High School’s sustainability efforts is the understanding that students face a dire future without it.

Therefore, sustainability is taken seriously at Frankston High School.  There are a number of initiatives taking place across the school, from sensors in classrooms that turn off lights and ceiling fans automatically, through to responsible procurement.  Sustainability is something Frankston High School is always endeavouring to develop and improve, with any feedback for future development welcomed from members of the Frankston High School community.

Attention: Members of the Frankston High School Community

Plastic waste is a significant issue and will be a greater issue for school age students in the not-to-distant future. Microplastics already contaminate the human food and water supply, so decreasing our use of microplastics needs to become paramount.

We can do something immediately!

Please send your children to school with reusable face masks where possible. This will have a significant and immediate impact on reducing single-use plastic in the environment.

The aim is for Frankston High School to become single-use plastic free as soon as possible – eliminating the need for single-use plastic based masks is one part of this process. Other ways to help include sending your children to school with their food in as little plastic packaging as possible, and getting them to use a reusable drink bottle.

Making the change to reusable is a small amount of effort, given the significant long-term gains. Please consider becoming part of a collaborative culture at Frankston High School - one that works towards enhancing the future for every one of our students.

ECO Team Annual Planning Day

Last Thursday The Eco Team held their annual planning day at the Frankston Lifesaving Club.

Throughout the day members of The Eco Team were taught about the state of the environment.  In groups, they collaborated on the formulation of plans for areas of focus in the coming year.  This included climate change education, a single-use plastics ban, and working with members of the greater Frankston High School community.  Mr Batchelor joined The Eco Team for a little while in an effort to inspire and support their work.  This was certainly appreciated!

A big thank you must certainly be given to the Frankston Lifesaving Club for providing the venue (thank you Andrea!), and also to Waves on the Beach for providing the delicious lunch.  The day was a lot more pleasant for students due to the support of these organisations.

BREAKING:

Coming soon – an Eco Team interview with Professor Mark Howden, director of the Climate Change Institute at the Australian National University. He is also an Honorary Professor at Melbourne University, a Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and a member of the Australian National Climate Science Advisory Committee. He shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with other IPCC participants and Al Gore.
