Leadership Centre

Curriculum

Halo semuanya,

It was another busy but successful week in the Leadership Centre! It's important to remind everyone to continue to consider their wellbeing during this time! This term, students have continued to explore the many ways in which we can practise the act of gratitude. Paying attention to the things that we have right now, and not worrying about what we don’t have is important. We can practise this by noticing the positives that exist around us. This week, 5/6 students reflected on what made them smile throughout the week and were asked to write a story about what happened and how they left. It’s wonderful to see students take time to reflect on what they are thankful for and to remember the things that make them happy, even during these uncertain times. Students also engaged in a positive self-talk activity that allowed them to think about phrases their Inner Coach could say. Positive self-talk makes a big difference to how we cope with challenges that come our way. Using positive self-talk can help us get through challenging times and to maintain determination and effort.

In Literacy, we took a break from our Book Club and Literacy Rotations due to the Curriculum Day on Tuesday and we will be welcoming it back next week! This week, students were given Talk Homework to complete for their Big Write on Thursday. Prior to this, students were given the opportunity to plan their story using a range of planning templates including the Narrative Story Graph and a table outlining useful VCOP elements that can be included within their writing piece. Staff were impressed with how students chose the most appropriate planning template for them to successfully achieve the task. After students completed their writing piece, they were asked to upload their work to Seesaw and to provide each other with relevant and useful feedback. As this is quite a common practise in the Leadership Centre and we wanted to further extend students by providing them with an opportunity to reflect on the peer feedback given to them. Students were provided with assisting sentence starters to help guide their reflection and through this process, they identified their own areas of strength and areas of improvement. It is important for students to acknowledge the feedback given to them, whether it is from staff, parents or peers, so as to continue to build their understanding of the entire feedback process.

In STEM news, we have Science Week fast approaching (next week)! This week we would like students to spend time gathering materials that they will need for particular science tasks. Students will have the opportunity to engage in fun and exciting science activities but don’t worry if you can’t get all of the materials! There will still be plenty of ways students can participate. We are looking forward to students participating and there will be opportunities to connect with the Junior School, Senior classes will be creating presentations to show them. Please see the images below for a list of materials needed for Science Week next week. Your child/ren will also be notified of these materials via our morning video conference and through their daily tasks on Google Slides.

Reminders

  • It is important to check-in with your child regularly throughout each day to ensure they are engaging in learning tasks and that they are using their devices appropriately. Next week, our wellbeing focus will be on cyber safety and students will engage in a range of educational activities created by the Australian Government's eSafety Commissioner.
  • Teachers will be posting a pre-recorded video of each day’s agenda by 8:30am. This will help keep the morning Zoom meeting time to approximately 40min (including the breakout room for Literacy). It is important that students watch the agenda video so they have a sound understanding of the daily tasks.
  • If your child will be absent from learning or Zoom sessions, please notify your classroom teacher or the office as usual
  • STEM week is coming up! Don't forget to sign up for the online Maths Morning on Tuesday August 18: https://forms.gle/Z5mynPnqALrrkpwH9.

Student Voice:

Kaiesha:

What is feedback?“Another person's advice and perspective on your work. It is not to make you feel sad but to help you improve on your work.”

Why is feedback so important?“If you don’t know what you need to work on you’ll never improve and not know where you’re going wrong or what you need help with."

Lavinia:

What is feedback?"Feedback is getting an outside perspective on work that you have done from someone that isn’t as close to it as you."

Why is feedback so important?

"Because it helps you improve what you have done."
