Building a Sustainable Future…

Australia’s population continues to grow from both natural increase and migration. Consequently, there is increased pressure to provide more ecologically sustainable solutions to the housing demands that this growth creates.

As part of the Changing Places topic, Year 9 Geography students have been learning about the ways that urban growth can be managed through a variety of urban planning strategies. To challenge the students to utilise this knowledge, the class was given a hypothetical brief to design an ecologically sustainable apartment block that would meet the growing population demands in Strathfield.

The students have embraced the challenge and have been working together in teams to develop innovative solutions to maximise the population density without compromising the streetscape and character of the Strathfield area. Groups are developing community letters, development proposals, advertisements and site plans to demonstrate their ideas and solutions. Each team will present their designs at the end of this week and will be judged on the environmental, social and economic sustainability of their proposed developments.

We look forward to seeing their final proposals!
