Kids' Cancer Project - Write a Book in a Day

On Tuesday 21 July, four teams comprising a total of 32 students from all year levels participated in Write a Book in a Day (WABIAD). Each team wrote and illustrated a children’s book within a 12-hour period. The finished digital books will be distributed to sick children in hospitals by The Kids’ Cancer Project.

WABIAD was an interesting and ultimately fun experience for me, and I’m sure that stands true for others as well. The whole event was conducted thanks to the hard work of Mrs Lee-Ack, Mrs Reddy and Mrs Ward. Their efforts were appreciated even more so this year due to their ability to work around the many mandatory restrictions placed in order to combat the covid-19 pandemic. They even bought us pizza, all while following social distancing protocol!

The day started off unsurprisingly chaotic, however the teams soon returned to order after the passionate discussions in every corner of the room. Of course, the teachers made sure that we were practising social distancing as well. The given prompts were thought provoking, and mildly infuriating, though they allowed for some engaging plots. While the teams discussed and prepared their stories, the teachers provided us with some much-desired snacks. Not only did the teams all have skilled writers, but talented artists as well. It was great to see the members of each team using their own set of skills or stepping out of their comfort zone to try something new.

Even though we had a whole 12 hours to complete the story, time-management and teamwork were key. For my team, in particular, it was quite an odd situation as nearly half of our team were calling in from home due to the pandemic. I am sure that every team had its ups and downs, but all in all everyone did their best. It’s always great when the Nossal community comes together to participate in helping a great cause like the Kids’ Cancer Project.
