From Our School Leaders

Education Week

We were delighted that we were able to host Education Week last week. There was such a buzz in each classroom, and the smiles on our kids' faces were lovely to see. Thank you for making the effort to come to either the Open Night or Open Morning activities.

Public education is very dear to our hearts, and we have a lot to celebrate and be grateful for at Scoresby PS. We have passionate teachers, who work together to bring a consistent and exciting curriculum and experience to the classroom everyday. Our students are respectful and our classrooms and playgrounds are calm and happy places to be most of the time.

The fact that every child in our great country has the right to an education, and can attend a local school, is something that is not granted to children across the world...even in the 21st century.

We would like to thank our School Captains Chloe, Indi and Kaleb (Cooper was unfortunately ill) for their assistance in hosting the Open Night and conducting school tours during our Open Morning on Saturday. Please look further in our newsletter for a few photos taken on the day. The rest are on our screen in the foyer.

Production

It’s coming around pretty fast now - "Sing and Play!" will be performed next Wednesday night at 7.00pm at The Crossways Centre in Burwood.  A lot of work has been put into this show, and we are really looking forward to finally seeing the performance as was intended last year, but cancelled due to lockdown.

It takes a team of dedicated and talented people to come together and work together, to put on an event like this. People will be thanked on the night, but I would like to recognise a few staff and parents who are really putting in a huge effort to get this show up and going.

Jarren Boyd has been working tirelessly to bring the show together. There have been rehearsals most lunchtimes and countless practices during Performing Arts sessions. The glimpses we have seen at assembly have looked terrific, with kids being well prepared and confident.

Donna O’Çonnor has led the costume design and has also spent countless hours stitching and gluing things together to make the animals in the play come to life.

Karen Coster has been part of the team and has been organising the makeup for the characters to wear.

Rosie Clark (parent of Aiden in 5/6F) has been assisting with choreography for many classes and Rachel Crofts has also added her skills to a few dances. Alison Lancashire is putting the program together.

There are many other staff who are helping in various capacities, and it is great to see the teamwork and collaboration that we have amongst staff at Scoresby PS.

Today was our dress rehearsal for our production "Sing and Play!". We hosted 2 local kindergartens - Scoresby West and Berrabri - to be part of our audience this morning. Thank you for coming along to SPS for the morning. It was lovely to have you attend the show!

Well done to all involved in making this morning’s event so successful. It’s going to be a great show – hope you’ve booked your tickets!

Illness

As we see the return of many of our freedoms, we are unfortunately also seeing an increase in community COVID infections, flu and colds.  Whilst there is no longer the requirement to quarantine for household COVID contacts, it is essential that children showing any symptoms of illness are kept home until symptoms are fully resolved. Our best chance of keeping the school functioning as close to normal as possible, and protecting SPS community members, is to keep illness out of the school.

This week has been extremely busy in First Aid, with many students being sent home who were possibly unwell at the start of the school day. If your child is showing any symptoms of illness, please ensure they are kept home until symptoms fully resolve. Please do not send children to school who have experienced fever, vomiting or diarrhoea in the previous 24-48hrs, or who are generally unwell with cold/flu/gastro symptoms.

Time To Enrol

If you have a child, or know of a child, who will be attending Scoresby PS in 2023, now is the time to enrol them. Over the past 2 years, the Knox Network of schools have been working on an enrolment procedure to try to align the entry to primary school with similar processes that exist when students exit primary school. The plan is to have children enrolled in their chosen primary school by mid year.

We are conducting tours of our school regularly; these can be booked via our website or by calling the school.

Tips To Avoid Being Late To School

Scoresby PS is committed to all of our students having the opportunity to grow and achieve their full potential. To be able to do this, we need for EVERY CHILD to be here every day on time.  On time means this: Your child should be in the classroom, seated, and ready to start the day at 9.00am.  Ideally, all students need to be on campus much earlier than 9.00am.  We start classroom activities, carry out morning procedures, check student work and do some one-on-one instruction with students prior to 9.00am.  If your child is late, they miss out on great opportunities in the classroom!  Also, they start the day off feeling rushed, anxious, and a bit behind those who were here earlier.

Here are some tips to avoid being late:

1. Make sure your child has everything together before leaving the house the night before.

2. Leave 10 minutes earlier when there is bad weather.

3. Get your child an alarm clock and begin to train him or her to be responsible for rising when the alarm goes off.

4. Don't EVER let a child wait until the morning to do homework, get papers signed, or pack a lunch.

5. Choose and lay out their uniform for the next day before going to bed.
