What's happening in our classrooms?

Our Grade 1 students have been working hard this term and have been doing lots of fantastic learning!
English
We have been working hard to develop our understanding of letter sounds by practising reading and writing words with specific sounds. We have learnt about digraphs, where two letters come together to make one sound, and have also been practising reading words with short vowel sounds.
Here we are blending and reading some words with the ‘ay’ and ‘ai’ digraphs that we have been practising:
This term we have also been learning about a new text type, Explanation texts. An explanation text explains how something happens. We have been reading examples of explanations and have been learning how to write our own four-step explanation texts. We have learnt to use the time connectives ‘firstly, next, later, finally’ to order the steps in our writing and have also been using our knowledge of describing words to add detail to each of our steps.
So far this term, we have written explanation texts about how a tadpole becomes a frog and how a seed grows into a piece of fruit. Take a look at our amazing writing!
Maths
This term we have been learning about length by measuring how long things are. We have been practising using informal units of measure, such as dominoes, icy-pole sticks, squares and cubes. During one of our Maths lessons, we investigated the question ‘does the tallest person also have the longest foot?’ We used our informal units of measurement to measure our heights and also the length of our feet to find the answer to our investigation question.
Here we are completing our length investigation:
Inquiry
Our unit of inquiry this term is History. The big question we will be investigating is ‘how have things in our lives changed over time and how do we commemorate important events from the past?’
We will be investigating important places, people and events from the past and how technology in our lives has changed over time.
