Junior Report (1/2)

No-Rest November!

To say that it has been busy would be an understatement! There has been so many wonderful, exciting things happening in the Junior Community, have a look below to find out just what we have all been up to.

Diversity Dash

Perhaps the most exciting moment we have had this term was the perfect way to kickstart our November. Students and staff participated in the inaugural 'Diversity Dash'; a celebration of different cultures and traditions. Students had the opportunity to run to different stations, each with its own unique activity, collecting different colours along the way, resulting in the incredible pictures you can see above. This was certainly a highlight for many students and they absolutely cannot wait for it to happen again next year!

Remembrance Day

On Friday the 11th of November, Wollert Primary School paid tribute to Australian soldiers who have served in global conflicts. The Junior Community decided to make paper poppies to commemorate the occasion and these were displayed in the front office for all to see. We also had some wonderful people give a speech to honour the sacrifice of Australian servicemen and women, they spoke really well in front of a large audience! We then observed a minute silence at 11.00 am as a sign of respect and remembrance for those who have died as a result of war and armed conflict.

Literacy and Inquiry (5 Senses)

Students have been experiencing the five senses as part of their inquiry and we have taken the opportunity to interweave these experiences into our Writing. Some notable language experiences include: experiments to see how best we learn (e.g. keeping a room dark and quiet or attempting to learn with soft music in the background), investigating how areas of our school and community cater for special needs (braille on signs, textured bumps before roads/crossings) and, most recently, using our sense of 'feel' to describe different things (see photos below). For the previously mentioned experience, students made ooblek, a non-newtonian fluid which is both solid and liquid, put their hands inside a mystery box and, finally, had to go into a room blindfolded and feel a mysterious item and write about it based on what they felt. From all accounts, students have had a lot of fun linking their writing to the five senses and it will be very interesting to see where the rest of the term takes them!

Contained within this, students have also been practising sentence structure, boundary punctuation, spelling and letter formation.

Numeracy

Students have been continuing their amazing work with renaming numbers and investigating place value. Teachers have observed a lot of growth and new understandings as students develop their number sense. Some students can even read and rename up to 6-digits! This concept proves invaluable to later Mathematical understandings because if students can read, rename and manipulate numbers, it will assist them with mental calculations when working with larger numbers, making students more accurate when answering Maths problems.

In Non-Number, students have had a lot of fun exploring the language of chance and experiencing things that are: Certain, Likely, Even-Chance, Unlikely and Impossible. This has resulted in a lot of exciting games and fun conversations as we discuss, and investigate, the likelihood of things happening or not happening.
