A New Chance for Reconciliation?

Our Year One’s have been pondering the question “Who is Jesus”?

Together we shared our thoughts about Jesus and his characteristics.

We think that Jesus

  • had a smart brain because he was a clever teacher.
  • had strong arms because they cared for so many people.
  • had a big heart because he gave so much love.
  • Had tough feet because he walked a lot!

It is always interesting to talk about and think about Jesus and his human characteristics.

This past weekend we had to make a choice about who should lead our nation. We had to choose between leaders with different opinions and ideologies, and had us thinking about what qualities a good leader should have.

I wonder “What does Jesus have to teach us about what a leader looks like?”

We can look to Jesus for examples of wise, loving leadership. But Jesus is so different from many earthly leaders that it seems foolish to compare them — especially when the more important comparison is between Jesus and ourselves. Are we speaking the truth? Giving Jesus our whole hearts? Valuing others? Acting with compassion and forgiving much more often than we’d like?

None of us are getting it all right. But we certainly can practice by speaking the truth in love and value the people who treat us poorly, and even people who disagree with us. We can let our compassion, instead of our desire to be right, motivate our actions. We can forgive, even before being asked. We can be like the leaders we want to see.

So this election could be another opportunity to further the progress of reconciliation in Australia. If we allow love and forgiveness to rule our hearts, our new leaders have the opportunity to bring healing to our land. But let’s not just leave it up to those people who have been elected, let us all lend a hand to heal the pain of the past.
