Year 12 Community and Family Studies

Year 12 Community and Family Studies (CAFS)- Parenting and Caring Panel

On Monday 9 March 2020, Year 12 CAFS students thoroughly enjoyed participating in a special Beyond the HSC presentation, which involved being part of a question and answer type Parenting and Caring panel.

Students are currently studying the topic ‘Parenting and Caring’, and they are developing an understanding of the types of parents and carers there are and how to best prepare for the role of a parent or carer in order to optimise the wellbeing of a dependent. They have learnt about biological parents, IVF and social parents such as adoptive, foster, step and surrogate parents.  They have also learnt about the legislation, social/community beliefs and attitudes and technological changes social parents face.

Our Parenting and Caring Panel consisted of - Mrs Perez pregnant with her third child, Mrs Whitby and her 3-month-old son Kai and Mr and Mrs Smith with their youngest son Anthony. Mrs Muller also gave her experiences of going through a first-time pregnancy and Mrs Clough explained the challenges involved in caring for her own two children with disabilities.

Delving into the world of parenting and caring resulted in fantastic questions and discussions about the different types of parents and carers, and both Anthony and baby Kai stole the show with just how cute they both are. Some lucky students even got to have a cuddle. All our Year 12 students thoroughly enjoyed the experience saying how awesome it was to put what they had been learning about in class into real life scenarios.

We would like to thank Mrs Perez, Mrs Whitby and Kai, and Mr and Mrs Smith and Anthony for giving up their precious time to be part of our expert panel.
