YEAR TWO LEARNING

The Year Two children are immersed in their learning and are continuing to work towards being the best that they can be.

In Religious Education, the children have been wondering at the human experience of being alive and able to love. The students were introduced to the source of these experiences, the human soul. The students explored reasons why Catholics celebrate the Eucharist using special actions, vessels and words. The Year Twos have begun to wonder at the human experience of belonging to a family. This has lead them to wonder at God, who gave them their families to love each of them personally. They will continue to explore ways in which Jesus lived in a family and this shows different ways of loving family members.

Each day the Year Two’s dedicated Literacy block is divided into three specific areas targeting Reading, Writing and Word Study. During this term the children have been learning about the structure of writing persuasive and informative texts as well as consolidating their understanding of writing narratives, retells and recounts. They have been busy creating persuasive texts by formulating arguments to support a variety of topics.  In reading, the Year Two children are continuing to build and consolidate strategies to assist them with literal and inferential comprehension of a variety of texts.

In Mathematics the children have been working hard on their understanding of Place Value.  The children have been exploring the number concept of multiplication through repeated addition, groups and arrays as well as division through sharing. In the area of Data Representation and Interpretation the children continue to collect and represent data through graphing and tallies. In the Measurement and Geometry strand they will explore the concept of telling the time using both analogue and digital clocks.

The Year Two conceptual focus this term is examining the changes in technology and the impact this has had on lives today.  Through discussion and research the children have begun to explore the history of music/entertainment devices and how technology has changed the way generations of people live out their daily lives. The children have also been exploring the impact developing technology has had in various areas of our lives especially communicating with others both near and far.

In Science, Mr Capolingua is focusing on Biological Science. To support this learning the children have been observing and caring for mealworms in the classroom.  They have also been discussing personal growth and changes from birth and recognising that living things have predictable characteristics at different stages of development.

In Health this term, with Mrs Clementson, the students have been focusing on changes in their relationships with friends and families now that they have grown older and have new responsibilities they are entrusted with.

In Music, Mrs Boddy has continued to provide opportunities for the children to participate in a rich music and movement program.

Mr Sheridan has been busy leading the children through a structured Physical Education program where they have learnt specific skills. The children have participated in essential fitness activities where they put their skills into practice.

SCHOOL FEES

A reminder that fees are due by this Friday 31 August 2017. Please contact the school office if you are unable to pay by this date.

VOLUNTEER WORKSHOP AND CODE OF CONDUCT

To assist with school based events, please ensure that both of these have been completed.

1. Complete the Volunteer Workshop

2. Read and Sign the Code of Conduct which is new in 2017.

It is a requirement that not only the Parent Volunteer Workshop has been completed, but the school based Code of Conduct has been signed and returned to the office.

Copies of the Code of Conduct are available from the front office.

VISITING THE SCHOOL - NEW SIGN IN PROCEDURES

An iPad is now available for entering the school during school hours. This replaces the sign in book. Please follow these procedures:

  • Sign in and receive a Lanyard or Exit Card
  • Enter the school
  • Sign out and return the Lanyard

All visitors to the school must sign in i.e. Parents dropping things off, Parents picking up students, Volunteers helping Canteen or Class, Students arriving late,  Maintenance workers etc.

PROLONGED ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL OF A STUDENT DURING SCHOOL TERM

There is an approval procedure that must be followed if you are taking your children out of school for several days.

  • Letter or email must be sent to the Principal and Teacher advising the school of the circumstances of the absence.
  • School then formally approves the absence with a letter sent to Parents.

It is important to note that the Education Act states that all children need to be at school at all times during the school year.

Prolonged absences should only be taken if it is essential for illness, pastoral and family reasons. In this instance it is a requirement that parents provide a valid explanation, in writing, for children’s

non-attendance at school.

It is also important to note that prolonged absence from school will impact on children’s learning.

Infant Jesus Day

On Infant Jesus Day the activities in the afternoon raised a significant amount of money. The session raised $2139.75. We thank everyone in our school community for a fantastic day celebrating our school heritage.

SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

It was wonderful to see so many Infant Jesus School families at the parish over the weekend celebrating the Silver Jubilee Anniversary of the church. Many thanks to our talented Infant Jesus School Concert Band and School Choir for their heartfelt performances. Thanks are also extended to the P&F who provided cupcakes for the children to enjoy after the 9:30 mass.

ENVIRONMENTAL  MINISTRY NEWS

As the Environmental Ministry, we have been inspecting the classes of each year level every Monday. We check their uniform, class and bags and there has been a clear improvement to our school. Classrooms are neater allowing better thinking and a better school and we hope that we keep showing a steady improvement - the students at Infant Jesus School are definitely #ExpectingGreatThings in their uniform, work and school.  Good job Infant Jesus!

SAINT GREGORY THE GREAT - FEASTDAY 3 SEPTEMBER

Gregory was born about A.D. 540 in Rome, the son of a wealthy senator. Like most of the nobility of his time, he was well educated. But unlike many, he was generous and concerned about those who were poor.

In his early thirties, Gregory was made the chief prefect, or governor, of Rome. Gregory was attracted to the religious life and soon left his position. He converted the family estate in Rome into the Abbey of Saint Andrew, became a monk there, and founded six Benedictine monasteries on his estates in Sicily. In about 578, he was ordained a deacon of Rome and sent as the papal ambassador to Constantinople, where he served until 585. When he arrived back in Rome, he was made the abbot of Saint Andrew’s.

In 590, Gregory was acclaimed pope by the clergy and the people of Rome. Unwillingly, Gregory accepted the role, calling himself the “servant of the servants of God.” Because of his political skill, learning, talents, and deep devotion to God, Gregory was able to make peace with the invading Lombards, save the city from famine by reorganizing the property and granaries of the Church, and restore order within the Church. In 596, he sent Augustine of Canterbury and 40 other monks to England to teach the Angles the faith. Gregory is called the “Apostle of England.” He died March 12, 604

POPE FRANCIS AND THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL

"The Gospel offers us the chance to live life on a higher plane, but with no less intensity: "Life grows by being given away, and it weakens in isolation and comfort. Indeed, those who enjoy life most are those who leave security on the shore and become excited by the mission of communicating life to others"". (Evangelii Gaudium "Joy of the Gospel" #10).
