Numeracy

NUMERACY UPDATE

Mathematics is the basis for many careers/jobs such as engineering, finance, medical research and all areas of Science.  It is becoming more evident that students need to be encouraged to make the choice to study Maths throughout their schooling.   Seventy-five per cent of the world’s fastest growing jobs will require STEM skills.

Year 12 or Certificate I/II completion of Maths is now required for a bank teller, retail buyer or a sales assistant.  A diploma or Certificate III/IV is required for a computer technician, an electrician or a draftsperson.  The list goes on right through to postgraduate studies leading to wonderful careers such as an architect, a meteorologist or a robotics engineer.

Discovering cures for diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, finding clean energy solutions and tackling climate change – all of these challenges require Maths skills.  I encourage you to have the conversations with your children, not only about how they see the future of our world,  but what they will need to do in order to achieve their dreams.

“Australia is already a global leader in science.  Imagine what we could achieve if women and men felt equally welcomed and appreciated in STEM professions. “

- Dr. Alan Finkel  (Australia’s Chief Scientist, 2016)

Number Intervention

The Semester 1 program has now been completed with assessments taking place next week (Week 11).  Students have explored place value, number structures and various strategies that can be used for addition and subtraction.  They are now thinking more mathematically about the concepts and processes involved in Numeracy.  Classroom teachers will be given comprehensive reports with suggestions for future learning.

Pre-assessments to finalise the selection of students for the Semester 2 program will be conducted in Week 1 of Term 3.  These students will be from Years 1 & 2.

Mathletics

Mathletics continues to be a popular way to consolidate concepts and process taught in the classroom.  Students should be logging-on at least twice per week.

We now have five more students who have achieved their Gold Certificate.

Congratulations to the following students:

Abby C (2),  Talia D (3D),  Mavi D. (5B),

Vaughn  B. (5N),  Sam J (5N)
