Welcome from the Directors

We have a jam packed fortnight ahead as we celebrate National Science Week at the Whittlesea Tech School, sponsored by the Royal Society of Victoria.  This year, our theme is 'Come STEM with us', and we have a fun filled day of activities planned for students, teachers and the broader community, as we celebrate the exciting career opportunities through the lens of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths.

We have launched our new inquiry program, 'Past, Present, Poverty: Liveability for all and have been amazed with the calibre of students work. The theme of our 2020 inquiry will be determined by students, teachers, community and industry representatives, who will come together through our inquiry panel to unpack the challenges and opportunities that matter to our local community.  I look forward to updating you with the theme in the next edition!

Girls, women and non-binary people of all ages, join us for an afternoon of making, exploring and celebrating STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and maths). As part of National Science Week, this fun-filled afternoon will include a showcase of local businesses and interactive activities where you'll be able to make things, such as jewellery, to take home with you. This free event will include afternoon tea, but registration is essential.

The Lakes tackles poverty in our latest inquiry

The Lakes P-12 have been our first group to participate in the 'Past, Present, Poverty: Liveability for all' inquiry program. Students have prototyped some amazing solutions, including the assistance wheelchair featured below. The assistance wheelchair helped to solve the problem by encouraging people to leave the house and offer them more support than a normal wheelchair. Most notably was the all terrain wheel array to cover every surface, including stairs and other challenges faced in day to day life.

Full STEAM ahead!

We have recently opened our maker space, STEAMengine for primary and secondary school students. STEAMengine provides a space for student to design, create and build their own protoypes, with access to the latest technology and mentors who can assist to develop the technical skills required.

STEAMengine is open to anyone under 18 years of age, with those parent/guardian supervision required for participants under the age of 13.
