PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Term Four Progressing Smoothly

With Term Four now half complete it is good to see that students are focused on the important work of studying for exams and completing assessments. Melton Secondary College students learn that to demonstrate our school value of Success it is important to aim high  and show Ambition, but this is not enough on its own. To achieve success you must stick at a task and give it your very best even if the task seems impossible. Like anything of real value, learning can be very challenging but it is also rewarding.

Three weeks ago, our Year 12 class of 2016 were given a wonderful farewell by the whole school and in the weeks since they have been concentrating hard on their exams. Soon it will be our Year 11s and then the younger year levels who complete their final assessments. All of our students are capable of achieving progress in their work provided that they stick at the task of getting class work completed and staying focused on their learning.

Last week the Term Four Progress Reports were published on Compass. These reports will highlight students' progress and where work needs to be done to achieve even better results before the end of the school year.  As parents and carers, the best support you can give your child's education is  to read the report and talk to your child about their plan for learning over the final weeks of Term Four. If you are concerned about your child's progress, please don't hesitate to contact his/her sub-school office.

Colege Recreation Centre

At the end of Term Three one of the major storm events that passed through Melton resulted in flooding to the College Gymnasium and damage to Court One. While this has caused only minor disruption to the sports and PE program at the College, it has caused considerable disruption for after school users. Newer members of the community may not be aware that while the MIRC (Melton Indoor Recreation Centre) belongs to the College, it is managed by the Melton City Council under a joint use agreement. Following discussions with senior council officers, I have been informed that repairs to Court One will happening very soon and we are hopeful that it will be back in action for the start of teh 2017 school year.

School Review - Community Feedback

At Melton Secondary College we strive to ensure that each day is a positive experience for every one of our students. However we know that sometimes things do not always go as well as they might. The commitment that our College makes is one of continual improvement. Recent feedback from the annual Parent Opinion, Student and Staff Surveys has been examined closely by the College Leadership Team and our School Council as part of our School Review. A range of comments were received from parents including; "My children are very happy at this school overall" and "The VCE program sets high standards and expects each student's best results". There were also suggestions for improvement such as; "The reports that school produces are confusing and need to be adjusted" and "I think that the school needs to communicate better with parents about issues concerning my child at school". As the School Review progresses into first term next year, a report to the community will be published containing more details from each of the annual surveys.

Parent Concerns and Complaints Policy

The College receives regular thanks from parents for the wonderful work that staff do to support the education of our students, but from time to time, parents or carers wish to raise concerns or complaint. As already stated, our College welcomes feedback and the opportunity to improve and where there concerns we are committed to resolving them in a quick and effective manner. Parents or Carers who would like to communicate concerns about matters relating to the educational program should contact the General Office and ask to speak to one of the Principal Team. The College Concerns and Complaints Policy is also avaliable as a download on the College website and from the General Office.

MSC Students and Zonta Club Support Newborn Babies

This year our VCAL students raised more than $800 to donate to the Melton Zonta Club and assist in their campaign to support newborn babies in developing countries. Food technology teacher, Sharon Cook has been involving Melton SC students in projects that support the community for many years. It is a great testimony to our students' capacity to not only care for other people but to put that care into action that they raised these funds and gave their own time to make this contribution.
