WRITERS' DAY

Students aged 13 - 16 are invited to register their interest in attending a fully funded Young Adult writers day at the Wheeler Centre.

The Wheeler Centre is thrilled to be launching a festival that spotlights the work of remarkable women and non-binary people from around the world, and presents a powerfully inclusive feminist agenda.

From 10am–5pm on Friday 8 November 2019, the Wheeler Centre is inviting up to 150 teens from around Victoria to attend a full day of feminist writing, ideas and action curated specifically with their interests in mind. The Friday event is fully subsidised by the Wheeler Centre, and teens who attend will receive the following:

  • A complimentary place at the Friday event at the Wheeler Centre (176 Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne) plus an invitation to attend the wider weekend of programming at the Melbourne Town Hall;
  • Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea (any dietary requirements known in advance will be fully catered for);
  • Transport to and from their school to the Wheeler Centre before and after the Friday event;
  • A writer’s toolkit, with everything they need to get the most out of the day.

Interested teens will be asked to submit a short proposal (up to 300 words) outlining why they want to attend the day and how they’ll benefit. Preference will be given to submissions from teens with a disability, who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, who are culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD), and/or who identify as LGBTQI+.

The Wheeler Centre for Books, Writing and Ideas has been the cornerstone of Australia’s literary activity since 2010. Our ever-growing community attends a diverse and varied programme of 180+ events each year (70% are free or low-cost). This event is an exciting programme for our existing community, and an opportunity for passionate and intelligent young people to set the agenda around conversations about feminism.
