"Learning a new way, but still ‘connected’."

Mrs Christine Phillips

Year 7 Frew: Pink Day

"One of the 7 Frew students (Erica) wanted to inject a little fun into morning roll call – we now have Wacky Wednesdays. It is fantastic that the students are so excited about how their peers meet the objective. Our next theme is ‘pugs’."

Year 8 Jenkin: Afternoon Chill-Space

Jenkin’s Year 8s are finding new and innovative ways to stay connected during the online learning period. Students have set up an ‘Afternoon Chill-Space’ two afternoons per week, (in the time they would normally participate in House Assembly or House Tutor). The other three days have been reserved for exercise, yoga, meditation and journaling (and generally having a solid-break away from their screens).

In class discussions in week 1, students identified ‘having some fun with classmates in non-academic situations’ and ‘having some time to have a quiet chat with close friends’ as priorities of the group. They decided that they would like to open up two afternoons each week specifically for these activities.  On Tuesday 21st April, Chloe Butcher and Olive Ritchie ran our first online version of Tuesday Trivia, which was enjoyed by all - especially Mrs Holmes who answered several questions correctly and came into her own with the ‘fast-money / times-tables’ section. Lily Richter also blitzed the General Knowledge section and will take some beating in future events. In the second activity of the day, Ethan Basilewsky showed the students a platform where they can access over 40 well-loved board games and card games to play with classmates going forward. In these optional sessions, students are also afforded opportunities to join their close-friends in supervised break-out rooms, where they can chat privately. These activities are already proving a winner with students and are having a very positive effect on their learning and overall well being. Students are already planning Uno and Mario Cart tournaments in the coming weeks, which the students (and teachers) of 8 Jenkin are very much looking forward to!
