From the Online Classroom Year 7 French: Une tasse de thé avec des gâteaux
Along with the rainy weather and the strangeness of Working From Home, a cup of tea and a cake seemed a great, comforting idea to try and arrange for Year 7 students of French.
Samantha Denison from 7 French rose to the occasion (as did her cakes) and snapped this shot of delicious Madeleines made from a recipe and posted for students to try and make as part of their current unit of work.
Welcome to the world Benedict, Issac, Beverly, Phillip, Jasmine, Charlie, Kai, Zainab & Eggo, creations of the Yr 9 Child Studies class!
Students had to create a newborn egg and capsule then care for it for 1 week as part of their Term 2 Child Studies assessment task, documenting their journey in photos and their daily activity log. They also had to research what happens at baby health checks for the first few months of a baby’s life. Well done girls. It was great to see the enthusiasm of your care, and the loving photos of your egg with grandparents, aunts & uncles too. - Mrs Cooper
Year 8 Masterchef- continued to be creative practicing their skills at home. The TAS staff missed doing practical lessons with the students. Kimmy the TAS mannequin turned up ready to cook. Sadly she had incorrect footwear and wasn't allowed. Luckily the following lesson she was prepared.
MUSIC
Well it has been quite different in the music department this term. The dulcet tones of our talented and enthusiastic musicians were no longer heard making their way through the corridors of CGHS.
That is not to say that the creative students haven’t been practicing! They have come up with tech savvy ways to keep playing and collaborating across long distances. Students and teachers have adapted and changed quite rapidly to new situations, whether that be working from home creating their own blues song or including their pets in all of their work! We look forward to getting back to creating music and performing to an audience again.
A number of our Ensembles will restart in Term 2 Week 6. In order to ensure the ongoing safety of students and teachers we will rehearse in the Cantabrian Hall and adhere to social distancing guidelines. Unfortunately choir rehearsals will still be on hold, however Ms Leung and Ms Flannery are in the process of arranging songs for students to rehearse individually with backing tracks. This will mean we can still prepare for performances that will take place at MADD or be filmed for the school website. String Ensemble is also on hold until such time external tutors can be onsite. The following ensembles will begin from Monday 1st June;
Stage band | Monday 8am | Cantabrian Hall |
Concert band | Thursday 7.45am | Cantabrian Hall |
Percussion Ensemble | Friday Lunch | B14 |
Ukulele Ensemble | Tuesday Lunch | B14 |
“Oh I’m stuck at home
Oh I’m stuck at home all day long
Can’t go outside and see anyone no more
Just waiting for all this to be over
Oh I’m stuck at home
Oh I’m stuck at home all day long
I lost track of what day it is now
When will I ever get to go outside again?”
DRAMA
Swashbuckling heroes, dastardly villains and dainty damsels in distress descended on Year 8 Drama classes in Week 5, as students resumed their face-to-face learning. As part of the Melodrama unit that students are studying this term, Year 8 Drama explored the exaggerated acting styles and the stock characters practised by actors in this highly entertaining 19th century form of drama - all done with 2020 social distancing, of course!
DANCE
Year 10 Dance are currently working towards their solo composition assessment task. They are very glad to be back in the studio as trying to choreograph at home was a real challenge. The concept of their solo relates to the recent bushfire disaster. Their choreography will eventually come together in a group work called ‘Black Summer ’ .
ART
The pictures are of Yr 10 creating paint swatches for their compositions.
Drama is not an easy subject to convert to online learning from home! However, our students rose to the challenge with flair and aplomb.
As part of learning to develop characters that could be performed on stage, Year 7 Students were asked to photograph themselves performing exaggerated facial expressions expressing a range of emotions, and to invent characters who were feeling these emotions.
They were also asked to invent a character by answering a series of questions. Here are the responses to these two tasks, completed with imagination and creativity by Georgie Bird from Year 7P.
Year 7 will participate in the NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge at the beginning of Term 3. The NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) was developed and implemented in 2008 to support the NSW State Plan for reducing overweight and obesity in childhood. The PSC is a 10 week physical activity challenge for students in public schools, with the aim of getting more students more active, more often. We will be encouraging all students to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day - even beyond the PSC challenge. The PSC is designed for students to work together in a team with the shared goal of increasing physical activity levels. The team aspect of the Challenge is an important element in encouraging all students to increase their physical activity levels. It is an opportunity for active students to be role models for their peers, where students can encourage each other to increase their activity levels together.Information will be sent out to Year 7 students later in Term 2.
