Futuretah's Rugby 7's

On Tuesday 19 March, two mixed ability U12 teams and an U10 team went to the Gunnedah Rugby Park to compete in a Rugby 7s tournament. All students represented St Xavier’s with pride showing great sportsmanship.

The U10 team only had one other team in their draw and so they had a mix of games and drills to improve their skills. They were able to play four games, winning 3 and drawing one. Their skills developed as they day went on with great tackling and passing in some entertaining games. Thank you to Mr Lyle for looking after the team as everyone had a great and enjoyable day.

The first St Xavier’s U12 team had a very successful day. They played four games, winning two, drawing one and losing one. The team displayed some determined defence on the day and improved their team work. This helped them to win bragging rights over the second St Xavier’s team in a hard tackling encounter. They made it through to the final, where they lost to Scone, who had previously beaten them. The game was played in great spirit and helped to qualify St Xavier’s for the next round in Tamworth. Thank you Mr Paul for looking after the team as many commented on how much they enjoyed the day.

The second St Xavier’s team had a tougher day as they blew out the cobwebs against the tough teams with two narrow losses. They steadily improved their tackling, passing and ruck work to go down in a close game against the first St Xavier’s team and then won their last game in a display of great teamwork. Their close losses meant they snuck into the 3rd vs 4th playoff where they went down by a try on the buzzer after the lead continuously changed. Thank you to Mr Thurbon for looking after the team on the day.

As was previously mentioned, a combined team will now go to Tamworth to try and qualify for the next round in Sydney. A big thank you to Mrs Herden for organising our entry, notes and jerseys.

(Thanks to Mrs Marie Hobson for the photos!)

Willow Tree Horse Sports

On Friday 22 March, 10 St. Xavier's students braved a very early start to compete at Willow Tree Horse Sports, held at Quirindi Showground.

The competition was extremely tough with over 160 competitors at the event. Our students all rode exceptionally well, coming home with lots of ribbons.

Special congratulations go to Mathew Clifton who won the 8 years Boy Champion at his very first Horse Sports. Congratulations also to Caitlin Guy winning the 10 years Girl Champion and Lachlan Gurney winning the 10 years Encouragement award for his riding.

Congratulations to all our riders who displayed wonderful sportsmanship and represented St. Xavier's proudly.
