Tutoring and Literacy at Scoresby Secondary College

A number of teachers have worked with students in the area of Tutoring and Literacy, this year. They have all commented on the effectiveness of being able to work with students individually, in small groups, or during other teachers’ classes.

Thank you to all these teachers for their dedication and hard work in supporting and assisting students so well. Thank you also, to all the students, for their willingness to learn and the joy they give us when their confidence increases and they keep improving.

Students at the college are very fortunate to be able to work with teachers, individually and in small classes. One way of assessing the effectiveness of this way of learning and the level of student engagement, is to ask the students themselves.

Here are the words, exactly as they wrote them, of students involved in Tutoring and Literacy, at Scoresby Secondary College, this year.

“I found working in a small class comfortable and much easier, since the teacher is always free to talk to and always able to answer your questions. This will help you with your work faster and to submit your assessment tasks on time.”

“Things that could improve is the attention to work in the class!”

“It is helpful being in a small class and being only six or seven people in a class.”

“This class was one of the best classes I’ve ever had in my life. It’s a small class which is why it was useful and helpful. I am glad that I was one of the lucky people that had the chance to have one on one with a teacher. This class helped me improve my language, writing, spelling and a lot of other things. Thank you for all the things you’ve done for us. I know I wasn’t the best student and I thank you for tolerating me for the whole year.”

“Some of the good things about Year 9 Literacy were:

  • Letting us have more time finishing work and assignments
  • Helping us if we needed help
  • Improving literacy skills, like proofreading
  • Learning how to write assignments and essays
  • It is better working in a small group than a big group”

“This year, we learnt about the different types of writing and different genres of reading. We learnt about homophones and we also learnt how to improve our vocabulary. I think it was good to be in a small class, because the teacher can help us more and give more feedback to everybody in the class, individually.”

“Literacy helped me correcting my work, as well as getting a better understanding. It was helpful in ways, but at the same time, I knew things, but overall, it was helpful.”

“I think the class was helpful, helping me to write articles. It helped improving my vocabulary and spelling. The teacher helped by expanding and giving examples. I liked that it was a small class.”

“The Literacy class helped me with my reading out loud and my writing has improved. Literacy was helpful and I think I have improved from the start of the year.”

“This class is good, feeling like a special English class. Our Literacy teacher is so friendly and patient.”

“My Literacy teacher has been an absolute delight to work with, although I've been a pain sometimes. He saw potential in me and trusted me and helped me do some of my best work I've done for a while. If the students helped out more and allowed his help, I think we all could be fantastic in Literacy and English.

Another great point is the small class, which means less waiting for help, or assistance. That means we can work for longer and get help quicker.

To finish off, the one-on-one chats have helped benefit me and my work, as he can teach me things and help fix errors in my work.”
