Caritas 'Just Leadership' Day
On Monday 31 October, SMC hosted around 40 students from five different southern Catholic schools for the Caritas Just Leadership Day. The day provides opportunities for upcoming leaders in the social justice space to collaborate and share ideas for future projects.
On the day we were joined by representatives from St Vincent de Paul, Catholic Mission and Caritas who explained to our students the social justice works they minister locally, nationally and globally. Students reflected on their definition of leadership and collaborated to plan their initiatives for 2023.

Farewell, Year 12s!
Last Friday 28 October was a bittersweet day at the College as our Year 12 cohort was farewelled with a Belling Out ceremony marking the end of their formal schooling at St Mary's College.
The day was filled with plenty of smiles - and some tears, as our newest graduates reflected on their time as St Mary's students, the knowledge they have gained and the lifelong friendships they have forged along the way.
We are incredibly proud of the Year 12s and congratulate them, not only for their achievements, but for their leadership and example of service to the younger students of the College.
We wish the Year 12 class of 2022 all the very best for their upcoming exams. We look forward to seeing them again soon at their Leavers' Dinner on Friday 25 November and Prize-Giving Night on Monday 5 December, their final celebration as SMC students.
See more photos from the Belling Out ceremony on our website here.
Icy wonderland sparks joy
Did you get caught in yesterday's wild weather? We sure did - with the surprise hailstorm transforming the College grounds into an icy wonderland reminiscent of a real-life snow globe!
Proving that we always make time for play outside - rain, hail or shine, delighted Prep students couldn't resist venturing outdoors for an impromptu snow adventure.
While there probably wasn't enough 'snow' to make a snowman, the Possums were kept busy scooping their hail into buckets, throwing 'ice balls' and even sampling some of the frozen treats straight off the ground!
Year 4 reflects on value of water
Students in Year 4 Myrtle recently grabbed their pens, pencils, crayons and paints to share their thoughts about water and what it means personally to them.
In celebration of National Water Week (17-23 October), the class created a poster based on this year's national theme of 'Our Water Stories'.
When invited to discuss and reflect on the value of water, students commented:
'It is really important not to waste water. It's really precious.'
Well done, Year 4 Myrtle on encouraging water conservation in our community. It's down to all of us to protect our water environments and resources, and use water wisely.
First Nations badges
Year 2 students, Phoebe and Oscar, pictured below, are proudly wearing their new First Nations badges, which were presented to students in Prep to Year 12 during last week's whole-school assembly.
The badges were designed by the College's Deputy Prefect, Caitlin (Year 12) and are a symbol of unity and identity for our First Nations students.
The artwork incorporates the colours of the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and depicts elements of the Australian natural landscape through the images of shells and native leaves. At the centre is the palawa kani word, 'rrala', which means 'strong'.
We think they look fantastic! Well done to all staff and students involved in getting this project off the ground.
Vinnies Quiz Night
On Friday 23 September, the SMC St Vincent de Paul group hosted their annual Quiz Night to raise funds for the Society in Hobart, with a particular focus on Loui's Van. We were generously supported by Hobart businesses with donations for our silent auction and prizes on the night.
I am pleased to say the evening was a resounding success and our team raised over $3,000 which will be passed on to Vinnies to support their works for the homeless and those in need here in Hobart.
A huge congratulations to the team for their outstanding efforts.
