Sustainability

A buzzing thank you to Camberwell Grammar!

A big thank you to Katrina Massey and Henry S (Year 12) for their support in establishing our bee hive program.  They helped with risk assessment documentation, proposal information and raised $430 on their Open Day seedlings and seed sales to help contribute to our bee hive setup funds. Their guidance and support have been greatly appreciated. Katrina came to visit and we had a lovely honey exchange!

'

Thank you to ASPS parent Jemima Collins for her integral part in following up on the idea when we first spotted it at the Borondara Sustainability Leadership Summit last year.

It was a lovely celebration session with Mary and Tom from Backyard Honey, the bee keepers who along with Henry Fried, look after our bees.

We are looking forward to using the honey in our kitchen classes!

Bee Incursion

On Grandparent’s day Year 4s had a bee incursion in the kitchen garden. Some beekeepers came to our school and brought a bee hive with alive bees and also samples of honey to taste, they learnt the difference between fake honey and bee honey.

We learnt the difference between the types of bees, e.g. queen, worker and drone bees. We got to see a real live bee hive with honeycomb and babies hatching.

They also showed the uniform, tools and how to use them, with a smoker to use to grab honey when they need it and to calm down the bees. The smoker has a very faint smell.

The bee incursion was a memorable experience for everyone and we can’t wait to do more fun things with the bees!
