Summerwave - Student Social Event

Thank-you to the NDCH (Northern District Community Health) who organised the Summerwave event last week in the KLC.   The students who attended appreciated the  live music, curly spuds/donuts from the food van and the temporary tattoo stand.  Thanks also to the staff members and parents who helped with the supervision.   The SRC student groups have met this week to discuss our next plan for future  social events and activities for the remainder of 2023.  Please send in any feedback so we can let the organisers know.

Road Safety Wearing A Bike Helmet

Road Safety - Wearing a bicycle helmet

Unfortunately there has been a number of near 'misses' recently around town on several intersections and in the Chapel Street carpark reported to members of staff.   We will be reminding all students who ride or use a scooter to obey all road rules and think safety first when riding on roads.  Attached below are the laws regarding bike/scooter safety in Victoria.

All bike and scooter riders are required to wear a bike helmet in Victoria. Mandatory bicycle helmet laws were introduced in July 1990. This applies when riding:

  • on roads and road-related areas
  • on bike and shared paths
  • in bike lanes
  • in recreational parks
  • in car parks
  • on footpaths.

Police can stop bike and scooter riders and issue a fine or a warning for not wearing an approved bicycle helmet. In Victoria: all cyclists, scooter (including e-scooter) and electric personal transportation (electric unicycles, segways etc) riders must wear a helmet.

Is it illegal to ride on the footpath in Victoria?

Children aged 12 years or younger can ride on footpaths. People older than this may ride on a footpath if they are riding with a child aged 12 or younger. Adults aged 18 years or older can also ride on the footpath with a young child in a bike seat attached to the bike.

Choosing a bicycle helmet

When choosing a bike helmet, make sure:

  • it fits firmly and comfortably on your head and cannot be tilted in any direction
  • the straps can be adjusted so there is no slack when fastened
  • it has a sticker showing it is safety approved and meets the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 2063
  • it is marked with the symbol of a body accredited by the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ), certifying compliance with AS/NZS2063 (for helmets manufactured or imported from 1 July 2012).

Calder Winter Sports

On Friday I was able to do a flying visit to Boort to take in some of the action of the Winter Sports.   In magnificent weather conditions all students from Year 3 - 6 had a fun filled day in the sun.   Thanks heaps to the staff and in particular some of our senior students who assisted on the day by coaching and umpiring.

Thank you Reana

It was with a tinge of sadness that last week we said goodbye to Reana Butterworth and her involvement at Wedderburn College. We had a morning tea and presented Reana with a small gift from the College. Reana has been an integral part of establishing our OHSC program and was its first coordinator. We wish Reana and her boys all the very best at their new school.

We will let you know when the OHSC  program is back up and running.

Covid Warning

After impacting Inglewood over the last week we have had four cases reported to us on Monday and more since then.   Please be vigilant.   Contact the college if you require a 'in date' Covid Test Kit. We still have some stock on hand.   We can all do our bit to stop the spread by washing our hands, sanitising and coughing into our elbows.   Please let us know if your children are unwell.   If your child contracts Covid it is a five day exclusion from school.
