Junior Sports News

Cross Country

We have had some fantastic results in the Wednesday afternoon race meets recently with Marnie, Maddison and Alex all finishing in the top three over the last few weeks in races at St Peters, Pulteney, Concordia and the north parklands. Younger students Bella and Charlotte have joined in and shown promising signs. We currently sit top of the table, narrowly ahead of Pulteney Grammar.

At training this week the girls had a pairs relay race, testing themselves out with a series of repeat sprints. The ‘pink team’ of Olivia and Charlotte were winners in the end, finishing just ahead of the ‘red team’ Lilly and Bella.

This week we had several runners qualify to represent the East Adelaide SAPSASA zone in the State Championships at Oakbank. Alex, Marnie, Maddison, Matilda and Juliet all headed up to the racecourse on a wet, wintery Thursday morning. The course was extremely muddy and slippery with several challenging uphill sections. Our girls ran brilliantly despite the conditions, doing themselves and the school proud. It was great to see East Adelaide finish in 2nd position in the 11 year old girls age group.

Netball

Our teams have started the season strongly with some wins, excellent numbers at training and fantastic family support at matches. The grading rounds are now finished and following the week off for the King’s Birthday we will find out our grades for the remainder of the season.

We have had some instances of illness to contend with the last few weeks and the Loreto community has jumped in to help. Some girls have doubled up and played back-to-back matches. Others have rushed from club games to fill in. A huge thank you also to Year 3 Tiana who put her hand up to fill in for her sister’s team in the Year 5/6 competition. Fearless!

Our Year 5/6 teams played an internal Lightning Carnival this week in place of training, given that there are no games on Saturday. Players were split into five teams – Yellow, Red, Black, Purple and Green. The teams played four x 7 minute matches each with positions rotated each game. All teams managed to get a win and in the end the Red and Purple teams finished on top with 2 wins, a tie and a loss from their four matches. The tie breaker was goals scored… however Red and Purple had also scored the same number of goals. The next tie breaker was who won the match between these two teams? Hmmm… that game was the tie!

So, no winner yet! We will go again next Thursday. The Purple and Red teams will have their grand final at the end of next week’s training.

Aerobics

Our teams continue to train hard on Wednesday and Friday mornings in preparation for our next competition – the FISAF State Championships on Saturday July 1st.

The girls performed well in the Super Series earlier this term. Results from the event:

Primary Phase 1

LC Thunder (1st) – Adella, Dana, Ella, Jemima, Lilah, Lily, Matilda, Scarlett, Serena

LC Diamonds (3rd) – Elsie, Grace, Gugulethu, Kalani, Rosie, Scarlett

Primary Phase 2

LC Illusion (1st) – Alyssa, Ella, Gabriella, Grace, Leja, Maeve, Millicent, Poppy, Vivienne

LC Dynamite (2nd) – Anja, April, Indea, Kartia, Michelle, Milla, Olive, Rosina

Soccer

Well done to our Year 4s who picked up their first win of the term – a 3-2 victory over St Peters Girls!

Tough Stuff

We had a nasty fall in a Primary 8 netball game a couple of weeks ago. Eva stumbled and crashed to the ground. As the crowd winced and oohed, worse was to follow as Maya tripped over Eva and also crashed heavily to the ground.

I quickly started rummaging through our first aid kit (how many ice packs do we have…? Can you make two injury subs at once…?) however I needn’t have bothered. Eva and Maya both picked themselves up, dusted themselves off. “I’m ok.” “Me too.” No blood. No tears.

Play on!

Despite what looked like a train wreck, Eva and Maya both jumped straight back into the fray. What message did this send to the other team? Whoa… these girls are tough. Sure enough, we won the game. Compare Eva and Maya’s reaction to some examples we’ve seen from opposition teams, eg a girl getting bonked on the nose by the ball: Instant tears… straight off the court… consoled by mum and dad… subbed off… (“I’m never playing netball again!”)

When we get bumped, knocked or fall over it does hurt. Yes it hurt, but am I injured? Do I need help or can I handle it? It hurts a bit now but if I give it a minute…? Can I keep playing or do I need to come off? Help is always there when you need it of course but sport will sometimes provide opportunities for you to demonstrate your toughness, courage and resilience.

Basketball

Due to various circumstances, we only ended up with 4 players on the court on Wednesday against Concordia. Despite being outnumbered, Beatrice, Erin, Michelle and Greta worked tirelessly up and down the court. We were 10 points down at half time but a dominant second half saw us draw within 2 points with a couple of minutes left. All four players hit the scoreboard and also picked up a number of steals. In the end we went down 22-26 but it was a courageous effort!
