Last Tuesday our Year 10 History students had their first experience in the newly opened Loreto College, Marryatville, Immersion Laboratory.
As part of their study of World War Two and its impact on Australians, the Year 10 History students had been learning about the defence of our nation against the Imperial Japanese Army in New Guinea in 1942.
In pairs, with one student guiding and the other wearing the 3-dimensional headset, the students ‘immersed,’ themselves in the virtual conflict on the Kokoda Track in the Owen-Stanley Ranges of New Guinea.
It was a remarkable experience as students ‘virtually’ struggled while climbing mud-soaked tracks and through jungle, interspersed with tropical downpours and the sounds of the jungle in day and nighttime. At various times engagement with enemy fire occurred, however; in a much safer environment than that experienced by the C.M.F. and A.I.F. troops over 60 years ago!
The most significant outcome beyond the obvious sensory experience was that the students gained and articulated their empathy with the soldiers and the hardships they faced and thus had a greater understanding of wartime conditions and their sacrifices.
In other humanities classes we look forward to soon exploring a range of virtual experiences including the ruins of Angkor Wat with Year 8 History students and the myriad of natural wonders in Year 7 and 8 Geography.

As part of Reconciliation Week the Year 12 Social Justice and Year 11 Legal Studies class where privileged to experience an interactive workshop with Dr Sarah Moulds (Senior Lecturer in Law – University of South Australia) on The Voice To Parliament. Students worked collaboratively with first year law students which encouraged active participation and fostered a vibrant learning environment. Having different perspectives and experiences added depth to the discussions and allowed students to understand different aspects of The Voice referendum. Each law student brought their own unique insights, which greatly enriched the learning experience. Loreto students greatly appreciated the professionalism demonstrated by the law students throughout the event. They were approachable, willingly answered questions, and provided valuable advice on how we can contribute positively. Overall, this visit from the law students was an enriching experience that not only educated us about the referendum but also fostered empathy and understanding.
