Sowing the SEADs of Success

From the Assistant Principal: Wellbeing & Engagement

Vaping is a serious issue, and I would invite you to read Professor Nicola Spurrier's letter to parents which outlines the serious medical issues associated with vaping.

Read below:

The media would have you believe there is many young people vaping. Although the numbers may be inflated by the media, it is still a growing concern and an important issue for schools, parents and medical practitioners.

As an educator in the area of wellbeing, I am always looking for resources that are trusted, accurate and informative.

Paul Dillion has been working in the area of drug education for almost 30 years and has excellent resources about vaping and other parent resources and fact sheets which I invite you to read.

EMBRACE YOURSELF

On Monday this week I was fortunate to hear from Taryn Brumfitt, the director of award – winning documentary “Embrace” and 2023 Australian on the Year. Taryn was a presenter at the Alliance of Girls School Australiasia conference, in Hobart. Taryn is a mother, fiercely passionate about the positive body image movement and is a global crusader to end the body dissatisfaction epidemic. Do yourself a favour watch her documentary, read her book “Embrace yourself” and have the discussion with your daughters about positively embracing their bodies.

“Darling girl, don’t waste a single day on your life being at war with your body. Just Embrace It” - Taryn Brumfitt

Embrace has been embedded into our Year 11 SEAD program. Our senior girls have watched her documentary since it was first released on Netflix, in 2016.

Taryn has recently produced Embrace Kids which will be embedded into our Junior Primary SEAD curriculum.

SEAD Across the College

The use of mobile phones and technology in schools has been a highly debated topic internationally, including in Australia. Almost all states and territories in Australia, have implemented full bans on mobile phones during class, recess, and lunch times, while allowing students to carry their phones during travel to and from school.

Critics argue that there is no evidence supporting the effectiveness of such bans, but this is a mischaracterisation. Studies have shown the positive impacts of mobile phone bans in schools. One study conducted in 2016, found that banning mobile phones led to an increase in student performance, with test scores improving by 6.4% of a standard deviation. Similar studies from Spain and Norway also supported these findings.

For parents concerned about mobile phone separation anxiety in their children, it is important to acknowledge it as a real issue and discuss the negative effects of phone addiction, such as sleep problems and mental health issues. Gradually introducing phone-free periods at home, setting clear expectations and boundaries and modelling healthy behaviours can help your child cope. It is also crucial to establish a support network and seek professional help if needed. Implementing mobile phone bans in schools allows for better focus on teaching and learning, minimising distractions and interruptions.

School TV has a Special Report on Mobile Phone Separation Anxiety to help address mobile phone separation anxiety and provide guidance on supporting your child’s wellbeing during this transition period. Here is the link.

Please see the Loreto College Years 7 to 12 Student Mobile Phone Policy linked and below:

Junior School students who have mobile phones are required to hand them in at the front desk as they enter school. Thank you for your support of our mobile phone policy.

Boarding Life

The boarding house has been a hype of activity on the back of a successful boarders week. We were lucky enough to have a visit from a food truck Van Dough who served up dessert to our boarders on Tuesday evening. 25 boarders and staff set off on a bus to watch the Power dominate Port. It was the first exposure to Adelaide oval and AFL for a few, it’s wonderful providing these experience to the girls. Our energetic staff held “ Anne—Marie’s Bingo night “ on Friday night. They had everyone in stitches with their theatrics when calling out numbers. Winter has well and truly begun but boarding house activity’s have been doing a break job of keeping the winter blues away.
