Sport

This week we ran the BMGS Athletics Carnival. Results from the Carnival will be announced in a future edition of Pulse.

This weekend is our final weekend of sport for Term 2. Please ensure that over the next six weeks you are still active and keeping up your fitness levels. Training and games will commence Week 1 of Term 3.

Congratulations

Netball

Last week we had a number of students attend the ISA Netball trials at Barker College. Congratulations to Olivia Harris (Year 10) who has been named in the 15 Years and Under ISA team. She will play at the NSWCIS Netball Challenge Day.  Zoe Long (Year 10) has been named in the ISA Open squad. If successful in the final cut she will also compete at the NSWCIS Netball Challenge Day later in the year. Well done to Olivia and Zoe on their selections.

Hockey

James Reynolds (Year 8) was mentioned earlier this term for his selection in the ISA Boys' Hockey team. This week he is congratulated on his selection in the Under 15 NSW Hockey squad. Congratulations to James on this fine achievement.

ISA Athletics Carnival

The next event on our calendar is the ISA Athletics Carnival. The team list will be posted prior to the end of term. Students are encouraged to both get their notes back early and to ensure that they have the correct singlet to wear on the day. These can be hired from the Uniform Shop.

After last week’s Cross Country Carnival all students are reminded that the only tights that can be worn to ISA are the BMGS tights and the only shorts/tracksuit pants should be the BMGS ones.

BMGS Firsts defeated Barker College, 60-44

The Firsts team were amazing in a hard fought win over Barker. Eliza displayed the grit and determination that characterises this team, with her relentless defense of a player 30cm taller than her. Her defensive game was perfect, allowing her to pick up any mistakes from her opponent. Brynn and Olivia were sublime in the goal circle, and Olivia added to her shooting with strong defense over the court. The midcourt of Phoebe, Mia and Lorena flustered their opposition with their smooth and fast attacking work and their tenacious defence. The whole team used their 'arms up' over the ball defense to perfection. Ellen was to be particularly praised when her self control was tested to the limit in the final quarter.

BMGS Intermediates were defeated by Barker College, 37-14

There was much to be pleased about this week. Bella had a great defensive game, with many tips and intercepts. Hayley and Tarana were strong in attack and relentless in defence. Skye learnt a new Centre pass move, Alana's shooting positioning was perfect, India's shooting and general play was great, Josie's athleticism stands out, Imogen gets stronger each week and, of course, Kate is always our rock at GD. However, while our court positioning is improving every week our poor ball control let us down and we failed to reach the team goals we set for ourselves. We will continue to work towards our individual team goals in the coming weeks.

BMGS Juniors were defeated by Oxley, 40-15

The girls persisted all game, however, unfortunately our passing let us down this week. We need to remember to look for all available options and ensure our passes are strong and in front of the player. We did see some improvement in the set up for our throw-ins and the 'Ruby Duo' were fantastic in defence, ensuring that the shooters worked for every ball into the circle. The girls are encouraged to adopt a growth mindset heading into the second half of the competition, recognising how far they have come and continuing to work hard on developing their skills.

Girls' Football

BMGS Junior A were defeated by St Andrew's Cathedral School, 3-0

The girls had a challenging game against SACS. The wind was relentless at Moore Park, which changed the nature of the game, lifting the ball with most passes and causing a level of unpredictability in the game. In the first half SACS, to their credit, played with the advantage of having the wind behind them and took long range shots at goals early in the match; leading to three early goals for them. Our girls worked extremely hard to shut down their play and marked their players consistently throughout the game. In the second half our girls held a tight defence, which led to no goals being conceded against us in the second half. BMGS had greater rhythm in the second half and built up some great passing from the back line, which created some goal scoring opportunities. We were unlucky not to score in the second half. Overall, I was very pleased that the girls had lifted the intensity throughout the second half and worked as a team in supporting each other in both defence and in our counter attacking play. A good effort by all team members.

BMGS First XI defeated Oakhill College, 4-0

Last Saturday the First Girl’s travelled to Oakhill College for what we knew could be a tough match. Needing a win to hold our place on the ladder, we took the field with no subs due to injuries from last week. However, we managed to dominate the play despite Oahkill’s aggressive play. We adapted to a new structure, allowing for efficient passing and first touch. It was a physical game and we sustained a handful of injuries ranging from ankles to jaws, but managed to come away with a 4-0 win. Great game, girls!

BMGS U14s were defeated by Redfield, 4-0

The U14s team had an early, 6:30am departure, although their game was not due to start for another seven hours. We arrived at Redfield College a few hours later - the school was huge. After many hours of practice games, cheering on other teams and training, the game started. We were down on player numbers with no subs whilst the other team had four subs. The game did start as planned, as Redfield scored two goals in the first ten minutes. Learning from our mistakes, we tightened our defence and even had some nice runs to the oppositions side. In the second half we were confident that our team could make a comeback. Although this did not happen, our team fought hard until the end with Eric blocking numerous attempts on goal and our team getting to the other side of the field with only near misses.  Although we lost, we are continuing to improve hopeful to win in the coming weeks.

BMGS U15s were defeated by Redfield, 3-2

This week we travelled to Dural to play Redfield College. We started off the game well, moving the ball up the field. They had some very fast boys as strikers with good foot skills. In the first half, Harry scored a good penalty goal after a hand ball by one of Redfield’s defenders. For the second goal, Harry again got the ball at halfway through an intercept and moved past three defenders to beat the goalie in a one-on-one in the goalie box. We were very happy and celebrated. Not long after that, Redfield had made their way down the field by passing to their fastest striker, who chipped it over one of our defenders to the centre striker who, having an open goal, shot and got it in. It was good play by Redfield.   Unfortunately, BMGS didn’t score in the second half, but we maintained our culture of fair play and good sportsmanship.

BMGS First XI defeated by Redfield, 1-0

Last weekend, the BMGS First XI came head to head in a clash that was to be the test of the season thus far. The game started with a warmed-up team, two players on the bench and an enthusiastic coach. Quickly, however, the match took a turn for the worse. This was a tightly contested match, both in the footwork and physicality of the opposition. After taking the first quarter to settle in, BMGS were clearly dominant, carrying the ball into the opposite half and pressuring the keeper.  Our boys kept their heads and continued working hard throughout the first half.  With injuries in the second half taking two of our players out, we struggled to find a line up that met our usual standard. After a long stretch of 0-0, the opposition finally scored a goal. In spite of our efforts, BMGS were unable to equalise.  It is the coach’s opinion that the BMGS First XI were the proud winners of this week’s game, in spite of the final score. These young men conducted themselves with great respect for their game and their School and they should be proud of their efforts.
