Senior School

I have written and spoken many times about the myriad experiences that constitute the broad and deep education experienced by young people at Blue Mountains Grammar School. Just in the course of this week, students have successfully taken part in two separate debating competitions (here in the Blue Mountains and out in Bathurst), undertaken a three-day canoeing expedition for Wilderness Education, been to an HSC Society and Culture Study Day, completed a sports strapping workshop, a Careers Expo, an English Poetry in Motion incursion and the Senior School Athletics Carnival. All this sits in addition to the outstanding classroom learning, Sports and Sport Training, Music, Arts and Drama Co-Curriculars that happen each and every week. What has really struck me this week, however, is the time our students spend on buses.

Living in the Blue Mountains, we know that attending most events is going to require some travel time. Over the course of a long day earlier this week I travelled with the HICES Debating Teams to and from Bathurst, where our students won three out of five very competitive debates with Kinross Wolaroi School, Scots All Saints College and Macquarie Anglican Grammar School. It was fascinating to watch how our students spent their time while travelling on the bus. Students read challenging novels, collaborated around their speeches with older students mentoring younger ones, they completed assignments and assessment tasks, prepared study notes and did their home-learning. And, there was some singing up the back. More importantly, students built relationships across year cohorts and social groups, laughing, sharing and collaborating. In the midst of a busy School life and curriculum, it would be tempting to think of time travelling on the buses as wasted time. From my own observations this week… this is certainly not the case.

Well done to everyone in the Senior School for an outstanding week!
