Grade 5 Snapshot - Term 2/Week 4-5

Writing

Last week in writing, students focused on the introduction and conclusion of a persuasive piece. They brainstormed what the structure of an introduction and conclusion would be. Students put this knowledge into practice when writing two different persuasive writing pieces.

This week in writing students revised the structure of a narrative, they then planned and wrote a narrative on the topic of their choice.

Reading

Last week in reading, students learned about the different text features that are used in persuasive texts. They learned about how emotive language and exaggeration are used to strengthen arguments in persuasive texts. They then practiced this skill by identifying emotive language and exaggeration in different texts and explaining its purpose and effect.

This week in reading, students read a good fit book and took ownership of their learning by choosing how to respond to what they had read in their Reader's Notebook.

Maths

Last week in Maths, students learnt how to do vertical addition, subtraction and multiplication. They also learnt about short division. These strategies were applied to different problem solving questions and games. They continued looking at different NAPLAN questions to familiarise themselves with the different types of questions, in preparation for NAPLAN.

This week, we move on to our Measurement and Geometry unit. Students will be investigating the appropriate units of measurement to use when solving problems and looking at the language used in Measurement and Geometry and how it supports us in understanding the conversions we make using different units of measurement.

Inquiry

Last week students began learning about discoveries related to our solar system. This week, students have begun their own inquiry into the planets in our solar system, the size of each and their distance from the sun. Additionally, students will learn about how Earth orbits around the sun and how this is different to rotation. Students were initially given this week to complete the task, however we have extended the project until the end of next week to ensure they have had sufficient time to complete the task satisfactorily and demonstrate their learning. Students are being assessed on these key criteria:

  • The creativity of their presentation
  • Time management skills
  • Their ability to explain their learning in their own words.

Once finished students will upload their work onto Seesaw as part of their portfolio.
