YEAR 2 EXCURSION - FULL STEAM AHEAD

We were all very excited to participate in the Full Steam Ahead incursions. Students followed the scientific process through investigating physical forces that we encounter every day.  They explored a range of forces and energy types including electricity, magnetism, gravity, elastic, friction, pushes, pulls and wind energy, and they examined how these can be applied to objects to make them move.

Students followed the design process and used their creativity to build, evaluate and adapt race cars that followed specific criteria. They had to use teamwork in order to evaluate and make adaptations to their cars to complete each of the challenges presented. We all had so much fun learning all about the different types of forces!

NAPLAN UPDATE

This year, the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has introduced new standards to NAPLAN reporting. Four proficiency standards will replace the previous 10 numerical bands and national minimum standard used in previous years’ reporting:

  • Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
  • Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
  • Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
  • Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily. It will be the clear responsibility of schools to ensure these students are provided with the additional support needed to progress satisfactorily, informed by NAPLAN results, other school-based assessment data and teachers’ knowledge of these students.

From Monday 17 July 2023, the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) will release individual student results in hard copy, and a series of tailored school and student level reports online via the VCAA Data Service. ACARA will release state and national results on Wednesday 23 August 2023.

STAY WELL THIS WINTER

In Victoria, influenza (flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection numbers are high among children aged 5 to 11 years, particularly in those in their first few years of school. The Victorian Department of Health expects more respiratory infections over Term 3.

Most children with flu or RSV have a mild fever, runny nose or cough. Some children, particularly babies and children with underlying medical conditions, may have more severe illness.

Keeping our school community well

Parents, carers and students are encouraged to:

  • wash and sanitise their hands regularly
  • avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
  • cover their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing · stay at home if unwell and consult a general practitioner (GP) or NURSE-ON-CALL as needed
  • stay up to date with flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.

Our school has masks for staff, students and visitors if they want to wear them.

Flu vaccination

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and your family from getting the flu. Annual flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and older. As part of the National Immunisation Program, it is free for:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and older
  • children aged 6 months to under 5 years
  • people aged 6 months or older with underlying medical conditions.

Flu vaccinations can be booked through GPs, pharmacies or your local council immunisation service.
