British Consul for a Day

As an aspiring diplomat and British national, spending a day with the British Consul-General in Melbourne for International Women's Day was an extraordinary opportunity. Three others and I were selected, meeting at the British Consulate early on the 24th of April. The day began meeting Stephen Lysaght, the Consul-General, along with his staff. We received an introduction to not only the role of the Consul-General, such as supporting British nationals within Victoria, along with serving as representative of the UK, along with British High Commissioner Vicki Treadell and other Consul-Generals. Due to the office being knee deep in ANZAC day preparations, we had the incredible chance to meet Wing Commander Faye Wiseman, to discuss the importance of bilateral cooperation for shared military strength and success. We continued to discuss avenues for diplomatic careers, and the importance of these careers with other members of the office.

After enjoying a lunch at Brunetti's, we concluded our day at Bremont Watches, as an example of how the Consulate supports British business expansion to Australia. Overall, the day provided incredibly valuable insight into Australia's diplomatic relations, and I am incredibly grateful to Steph for proving this opportunity.
