Speaking and Listening

This term, students will engage in a range of learning experiences that will strengthen their Speaking and Listening skills. Their participation in the whole-school production will support learners’ development of rhythm and turn taking. These skills will be transferred to their own mini performances that will be developed during Inquiry learning. Students will practise reading aloud to support their development of expression while reading and practise active listening as respectful audience members. Students will continue implementing ‘talk moves’ when engaging in whole-class discussions to share their opinions using both verbal and non-verbal methods.
To support your child’s Speaking and Listening skills at home, you could:
- Ask each family member to share about their day at the dinner table. During this time, your child will be practising active-listening and turn-taking skills.
- Encourage your child to practise their song and dance for the production.
- While reading with your child, implement expression by using character voices, raising volume at an exclamation mark and inflecting (increasing pitch) at a question mark.
