Writing

This Term in Writing, we will focus on developing a range of functional texts encompassing letters, invitations, emails, and lists. Students will explore the distinct forms, structures, and purposes of these text types; applying key features to their own writing. Engaging in hands-on activities, students will generate a variety of functional writing pieces. For instance, they will compose letters to their Senior School buddies, utilise iPads to craft and respond to emails, and create invitations to celebrate our GWPS Production.

Throughout the term, students will deepen their understanding of sentence structure and the Writing process through our comprehensive Whole-School Approach, the implementation of VOICES strategies. Students will continue to set personalised VOICES goals, and their comprehension will be reinforced through both group and individual conferencing sessions.

We are excited to provide students with the skills to develop their functional writing skills, allowing them to effectively communicate and express themselves in a variety of real-life contexts.

To support your child’s Writing skills at home, you could:

  • Invite your child to engage in authentic writing experiences, such as crafting a shopping list, sending postcards during holidays, composing emails or letters to relatives, writing greeting cards for special occasions like birthdays, etc. These practical tasks help them understand the purpose and relevance of functional writing.
  • Involve your child in opening and sending mail at home and discuss the different reasons why you receive letters. This will strengthen their understanding of the purpose, structure, and key elements of these texts.
  • Encourage your child to read over their writing. They can practise editing for spelling, punctuation and/or sentence structure.
