Reading and Viewing
In Term Three, Year One students will focus on developing their practical Literacy skills through the exploration of different functional texts. They will analyse letters, invitations, and emails, which will support their learning in Writing. Additionally, learners will continue their engagement with the CAFÉ Reading program, which emphasises key reading components such as Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary. Students will work on their individual reading goals during one-on-one conferences with teachers and independent Sustained Reading sessions. Furthermore, our Reading lessons will include the analysis of folktales and fables, aligning with this term’s Inquiry unit. We are excited to provide enriching literacy experiences for our Year One Students as they continue to grow and develop throughout this term.
To support your child’s Reading and Viewing skills at home, you could:
- Listen to your child read a book (their take home reader) for at least 20 minutes each day and encourage them to record this in their Reading Diary.
- Utilise ‘Reading Eggs,’ which contains a variety of texts, lessons and learning tasks (you can find your child’s login details are in their Reading Diary).
- Strengthen your child’s comprehension by asking them to retell the main events in the book, in the order in which they occurred.
- Ask your child to explain possible reasons for different events in the text, such as: “Why do you think the character was laughing on the second page?”
- Visit a local library and borrow a range of different texts, both fiction and non-fiction. You will find a previous anchor chart on Seesaw that identifies the features of each text type.
- Read letters, emails, shopping lists and to do lists with your child to allow them to understand functional texts in context.
- Read Aesop’s fables with your child and support them to find the lesson/moral in the story. A selection of these have been assigned to your child’s Reading Eggs library.
