Boite Choir Performance

Boite Choir is a fun program that happens once a year across various schools. Students at schools across Melbourne attend choir practices a couple of times a week at their school. Then, after many practices is a big performance where all of the student’s families and friends can come to enjoy the choir at the Melbourne Town Hall. It is such an amazing experience and an exciting thing to be a part of. This year showcased songs from the Torres Strait.

When all the students arrived at the Melbourne Town Hall for our performance we got handed out special tee shirts with this year's logo on it, a Torres Strait Islander flag with a Frangipani flower and a bird, illustrated by one of the Boite directors. We put on the tee shirts and got ready for our practice on stage. It was very exciting seeing the gorgeous Melbourne Town Hall where we would be singing. After our practice and run through of all the songs, speeches, and dances we headed back to our room and had some dinner. There was a nervous but excited buzz filling the room. After some time we went backstage but this time the real performance was about to begin and we were all very worked up and were having a good time spotting and waving at our families. The performance started by singing ‘Maiem’ alongside artist Uncle Luke Captain who is a Melbourne based artistic director from Murray Island in the Torres Strait Islands. The other directors are Deb Clark and Stella Savy, very experienced vocal coaches and educators who did a fantastic job on running the show. Following Maiem there were a lot of other songs with a break in the middle by a cool dancer named Aba. At the end of the show we sang ‘’Oh Yawo’ Which was a really nice way to end our show.
