Cert I in Racing

Four of our Year 10 students are participating in the Cert I in Racing – Stablehand VET course.

The course is held at the Riding for Disabled Association in Alice Springs. Students are learning practical horsemanship skills about catching their horse, safe handling, care for the horse, cleaning stables and paddocks and three of our four have progressed to riding their horses. The course is very hands on.

Being mostly practical gives the students a real chance to be enthusiastic, (after manure picking of course) and they can display the skills they are being taught by the trainers at the RDA.

The horse breeds they are training with include off the track thoroughbreds, standard breeds, brumbies and even an ex-saddle bronc horse! Quite a big deal when you know how powerful these beautiful animals are and what they have been previously trained to do.

Keneifa Hayes, Crystal Smith, Samson Jones and Rowena Coulthard are gaining real confidence and competency in the course, and it is a real pleasure to assist them each week and watch them develop their stablehand skills. Giddy up!
