From the Executive Team

Welcome to Term 2. This is the strangest school term most of us have ever experienced and is presenting many challenges for students, families, teachers and school leaders alike. I am pleased to say that, given the nature of the circumstances, we are generally coping very well.

Many parents and carers have collected paper copies of student work for the first two weeks of term and students have been engaging well with it. Over the last two weeks the IT team have loaned out 345 school laptops to students. We have now accessed more laptops and will be lending them out next week.

People will be notified individually of where and when to collect them. If your child needs a laptop and has not already let the school know, please click the link https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=sq6R_r55_0aC8PD8VUX3ZDKYE6Zg-MBEoI3U7CNstaBURVlPRllIMlBHNzRPNFIxWTRGRlJZSDY2Qy4u

and record their details on the form.

Thank you for your patience with this. As you can imagine, the school only has a certain number of computers available and it takes time to access more. Please don’t request one if your child has one already, as numbers are limited. Families with more than one child can request one per child.

Our plan for remote learning from next week onwards, is to use Compass as our learning platform. Learning Mentors will be marking student attendance each day. Students need to log on to their learning mentor team before 10am each day to let their learning mentors they are engaging with their learning tasks and how they are going. Teachers and students will follow their normal timetable and students are expected to complete 4 lessons per day. These are available on Compass. Teachers will invite students to participate in at least one video link per week for their core subjects and one video lesson per fortnight, for subjects with two periods per week. Teachers will be available to answer questions on the “Chat” function of teams at other times.

The college has developed some documents with advice to assist parents supervising students learning remotely. These cover setting up the learning environment, creating a schedule, well-being tips and more. There is also some information on the Teaching & Learning page of this newsletter. The full documents can be accessed on the college website at www.gssc.vic.edu.au

Stay safe and well.
