Magis

At this week’s Secondary Assembly Magis and Altiora Students were recognised for outstanding performances in three major WA Gifted and Talented competitions, Creative Edge at Curtin University which our Year 12 team won, Da Vinci decathlon at Wesley where John XXIII College won the Year 9 Mathematics and Year 7 Creative producers, and the World Scholar's Cup at Sacred Heart College, where students from Years 7, 9 and 10 won a total of 24 gold medals and all seven teams qualified for the Global round in Melbourne, at which we will be represented by our year 9 and 10 teams. Also recognised at Assembly were the winners in the Magis John XXIII Public Speaking and Creative Writing Competitions.
Prizes and Certificates for all these awards, plus the Magis Academic Spelling and Mental Mathematics, will be presented after the special Magis Awards Breakfast at 7.30am on 27 June, the final Wednesday of term. This will be combined with the opening of the display of personal projects completed by Year 7 and Year 8 students in the Magis classes in Semester One. The Breakfast, with keynote speaker Tom Paparo, will be in the Thomas More Centre at 7.30am, after which we will move to the Library for Presentation of Magis Awards and the opening of the personal project display. Invitations have been sent home to parents and these need to be returned by Wednesday 20 June for catering reasons. A Personal Project Program will available at this event.
Parents are asked to please return forms for major events as soon as possible. Apart from the Magis Breakfast and Personal Project opening forms, forms for the Jesuit Debating Carnival at St Ignatius College in Sydney and the World Scholar's Cup Global round in Melbourne in August are also due. Forms for the Magis Middle School Camp for Years 7-9 students are due at the start of week 9. This Magis Camp will be held at the beautiful Point Walter campsite and highlights will include major sessions from the outstanding Alpha Motivation and Opti-MINDS presenters, other guest speakers and sessions including Great minds and even challenges on the Flying Fox.
Next week sees several important Magis related events including WADL interschool debating at Christchurch on Tuesday evening, Mock Trials at the Supreme Court on Thursday and Magis Mooting at Notre Dame University on Saturday. Good luck to all students involved and warmest thanks to the coaches and managers.
