Dear Parents
Today our PP-Year 3 students celebrated Mass with Fr Rodrigo. The children participated beautifully in this special time of prayer and reflection. A big thank you to Year 2G for leading this lovely liturgy and to Miss Cooney and Mrs Haydon (Liturgical Music Specialist) for preparing the children so well.
It is hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of Semester One. Reports will be ready to be released from 3.00pm on Friday 29 June. I would like to thank all the teachers for all the work they are putting into preparing these reports.
As you are aware the College is now using ‘SEQTA’ as a learning platform and parents can interact with this product via a website known as ‘SEQTA Engage’. When parents log in to this website you are able view your children’s academic reports which are generated as PDF files.
To access SEQTA Engage please use the following link as the URL in your internet browser.
https://parent.johnxxiii.edu.au Once you have logged in, the reports can be accessed under the ‘Assessment’ tab.
New families and Pre-Primary parents would have now received their login details.

Congratulations to all the children who have recently received the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist or Confirmation at the various Parishes. We would love to see some photos! Please send a copy of child’s Sacramental certificate to school so we can update our records.

Magnificent Mud
On Wednesday it was Mud Day in Kindy!
The children were asked to wear their oldest clothes to Kindy and to get ready to be very messy. This ‘hands-on’ was embraced by all of the children who had so much fun exploring the different elements of clay, mud and ochre. Trudie from ‘Educated by Nature’ showed the children how mud is made and encouraged them to use the ochre to paint their faces, inspired by Noongar traditions.
The Kindy children and staff had a great time playing with the natural clay and mud pies were made on the day!
Year 6 STEAM Challenge
The Year 6 students have been on an eleven week journey to understand and solve a problem at the Regional Resource Recovery Centre (RRRC) in Canning Vale. Their mission was to create a prototype to prevent another $20 million fire caused by batteries.
While learning about recycling, the students have also discovered more about engineering by building Lego prototypes of the machines found at the Canning Vale recycling facility. Following the recycling life-cycle, the students have built prototypes of rubbish trucks, conveyor belts, rotating sifts and forklifts. They also had the opportunity to build their own Lego washing machine to understand the importance of centrifugal force and grey water recycling.
At the same time, they have learnt about sensors and other electronics that may improve the safety and efficiency of the recycling facility.
The final stage of this program was the STEAM challenge was the invention of their own battery removal prototype. Their creative, engineering and entrepreneurial skills were put to the test even further as they were also required to pitch their ideas and show-off their Lego prototypes in a bid to win over ‘technology investors’ from Perth's hi-tech industry. These investors were Charlie Gunningham (Commercialisation Adviser - Department of Industry, Innovation & Science Accelerating Commercialisation), Conor Macgill (Waste Education and Projects Officer - Southern Metropolitan Regional Council) and Ben Aylett (Technology Expert & Commentator for Channel 7, 9 & 10 & Fairfax Media)
Our special guests provided the students’ with great feedback and were very impressed with students’ battery removal prototypes and their associated presentations.
Winter Fixtures
In the past two weeks, our Years 5/6 Interschool teams have participated in home and away fixtures against Newman College. The two schools have continued great rivalry and the teams have been very even especially in netball and soccer. It was an opportunity for our hockey teams to play their first interschool games and were dominant in both fixtures. Our footballers were well beaten at Newman on a very wet afternoon last week. However, JTC footballers fought back with great spirit yesterday and were only narrowly beaten. It is wonderful to see our students really engaged and enjoying their winter sports.
Winter Lightning Carnival
Next Thursday 21 June we will host the IPSHA Winter Lightning Carnival. We will cater for 72 teams; the most number of teams that we have had on College grounds. If you have some spare time next Thursday it would be great if you can pop-in to have a look at this wonderful spectacle. The fixtures commence at 9.45 am and concludes at 1.45 pm. During this Carnival our football team will be competing in the ‘Eagles’ Cup’ competition.
Cross-Country
It is wonderful to see so many students and their parents turning up to cross country training on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. There have been many students attending but I would like to see a few more in the next couple of weeks as the Carnival is on Tuesday 24 July. Just a reminder, that there will be no training next Thursday 21 June because of the Lightning carnival.
