Leaders
‘Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.’
Eleanor Roosevelt
Earlier this week our Year 11 students participated in their Id Quod Volo Retreat. It is a Latin expression for 'that which I desire' and the focus of the day was on leadership. Our Year 11 cohort was also introduced to the leadership opportunities available on the Student Representative Council in 2019.
The message for our students is that leadership can be exhibited in many ways. Often a quiet word of encouragement, gentle praise or patient listening are just as important signs of leadership as eloquence with a microphone. This week’s House activities were as follows:
- Campion: visited the Mont Clare Aged Care Facility in Claremont.
- Koolyangarra: worked at Ronald McDonald House and participated in activities to develop leadership skills at Kings Park.
- Loreto: students worked with the Year 6 students at Majella Catholic Primary School.
- Loyola: did a combination of physical and intellectual challenges to solve a puzzle, while collaborating and displaying leadership skills at Kings Park.
- St Louis: students participated in activities to develop leadership, organisation and collaborative skills at John Leckie Pavilion, Nedlands.
- Ward: students attended a presentation on leadership by Dr Gregory Hine at the University of Notre Dame and participated in activities intended to develop organisation and leadership skills.
At our assembly this week I linked the Year 11 leadership day to the insights shown by our predecessors at John XXIII College. At a time when our master planning for the future is occurring it is worthwhile considering the evolution of our campus over the past four decades.
Our College has been truly blessed to have inspirational leaders with a focus on ‘great ideas’.
