Middle School
Thalgarrah
On Thursday May 3 Middle School Survival elective students travelled to Thalgarrah to participate in the Kids vs Wild experience. After arriving students were placed into groups. We discussed what characteristics would help people survive and how students could get the most from the day’s events.
The students then learnt how to read and orient a map using a compass. This map gave them coordinates to find a number of objects they would use for later activities. The groups were then ‘released’. Some groups demonstrated their prowess at working together and navigating, whilst others had to be stopped before they ended up back in Armidale.
Once all groups found their parcels and got to the finish they were then instructed to build a shelter using some of the objects they had collected and anything around them in the wild. This ended with the highly amusing “rain” test, which saw a few students get a little damp.
Students then returned to the start where they tested their abilities to start a fire with a flint and maintain the fire which was required to cook their lunch. To do this, students needed sustenance, so were challenged to the “Hard Core” challenge, where they attempted to eat an entire apple… core and all. Ben Kaberry had to show off and ate two!
Our self-cooked sausage sandwiches were delicious, but the final challenge awaited. Students had to eat a worm! Thomas Frost Swan refused but most others found them very delicious.
All students had a fantastic day and we congratulate them on their behaviour and efforts for all having a go.
