On Thursday 13th June Year 7 had their interschool sports day, and here are some highlights.

Girls Soccer

Captain and Best Player was Lila Hamilton with our Goal Scorer being Lily Skinner. The Best Players were Matilda McIntyre (defender), Alyana Burns (Midfielder) and Jessie Kelly (Midfielder).

Badminton

We had 14 boys and 16 girls so we fielded 3 boys teams and 3 girls teams for the round robin competition. Several players were new to the sport, as well as a number who have played competitively. In Teams B and C, all players enjoyed some success - each player contributed points for their team and each team won at least one match.

All players demonstrated great enthusiasm and sportsmanship, ensuring that everyone received fair opportunities to play, encouraging their teammates, working cooperatively with players from other schools and being both gracious winners and losers. Both Boys A and Girls A won every match, advancing to the next round.

Boys A

Dhruv Pawar

Girls A

Netball

Our Netballers had a very big day, from starting play as soon as they arrived to the last game, with no breaks. Even under these conditions, and not receiving high scores, the girls never gave up enthusiasm and were optimistic throughout. It was noted by other schools how well their sportsmanship showed.

Year 8 Hightlights

All Year 8 students were fortunate enough to partake in Glen Eira Youth Services’ incursion Sleep & Technology, where students learned about fundamental human needs and the impact that technology is having on our vital need for sleep. The incursion covered strategies to deal with troubled sleep that don’t involve the use of technology, as well as drawing attention to our favourite memories and noting how few of these (if any) took place online. While we recognise that our lives are intertwined with technology, we don’t need to let it impact our basic human needs. We hope that all students have taken something new on board and are more mindful of their screen time use, as well as how getting enough sleep can have a positive impact on learning.

On Thursday 6th June we had most of the cohort out for the day on Year 8 Interschool Sport. We fielded teams in a variety of sports; from netball and football, to European handball, badminton and boys soccer. All students involved enjoyed the day, engaging with other schools in some healthy competition and represented the College well. We commend the boys soccer team in particular for making it to the grand final. Their efforts were fantastic; unfortunately Albert Park scored in the final minute leaving us in second place and runners up overall.

Talking of representing the college, congratulations to those students from 8B (and 7B!) who were involved in the Melbourne Round of the World Scholar’s Cup, held for the first time ever at GEC. There were all manner of different thought-provoking activities happening across the two days, and a number of our teams were successful in advancing to the next stage of competition. Well done!
