Student Achievements

Trinity Ryan  (Year 12 - T2)

Congratulations to Year 12 student Trinity Ryan who has achieved outstanding results in Irish Dancing competitions.

Trinity placed top 10 in Australia gaining an 8th place in the 16 years girls age group at the Irish Dancing National Championships in Cairns. She also placed 6th at the AIO in Brisbane (international competition), 2nd in City of Sails Auckland, NZ, and 2nd at the State Championships.

We as a College have been fortunate to see Trinity perform at Harmony Days. Congratulations and good luck for future competitions.

Ms S Rainford (Deputy Principal - Years 8, 10 and 12)

Nes’eya Williams (Year 11 - M5)

Earlier this month the St Norbert College Specialised Basketball Program experienced a tremendous success. Nes’eya Williams (Year 11) is the first student to sign a professional WNBL contract with the Perth Lynx. The Lynx have recently completed their pre-season and had their first game last weekend, unfortunately going down to the Adelaide Lightning.

For anyone who would like to follow Nes’eya and the Lynx, the WNBL will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and the ABC.

Congratulations to Nes’eya.

Brock Puljar (Year 7 - M1)

Congratulations to Brock Puljar who competed in the WA BMX State Titles held in Kalgoorlie over the school holidays. Brock has been competing since he was 6 years old and rides in two different classes. He made the semifinals on his 20" bike in 12 year old boys and won a State Plate of 6WA in 11-12 year old Boys Cruiser. This is the fourth consecutive State Plate Brock has won for BMX. Well done, Brock!

Joseph Roscoe (Year 8 - M2)

In the last newsletter, I wished Joseph Roscoe good luck in representing the Perth Glory Academy in the U/13s National Youth Academy Championships held in Coffs Harbour (NSW) over the October school holidays. I was pleased to hear that Joe and his team came back to Perth victorious in the competition after playing seven games in five days in atrocious weather conditions. From all reports, Joe came home battered and bruised after many tough games but with a big smile on his face! Congratulations, Joseph!

Zeta Stevens (Year 9 - K6)

Congratulation to Zeta Stevens who has had a fantastic netball season in 2018. Zeta was awarded MVP for her club netball team and represented her association earlier in the year in the U/15s team. Through her strong performance, she was then selected for the U/16s South East Demons Academy side (team two). The tournament was played over three days during the October holidays consisting of nine full games and the possibility of a final. Ten districts in total competed in Zeta’s division, involving some 100 individual athletes and I was happy to learn that Zeta’s team (of which she was co-captain) placed 4th overall in a very tight competition.

At the conclusion of the competition, there is one player selected from each district/division who receives the honorary Spirit of Academy award for most outstanding contribution and Zeta was a very worthy recipient of this award. Coaches, selectors and managers made comment of Zeta’s commitment, passion and maturity shown over the three days and it is fantastic to see Zeta’s hard work on the court paying off. Well done, Zeta!

ACC Athletics 'Virtual Carnival' and All Stars

I was very excited to receive an email from the ACC during the holidays with the results of the Virtual Carnival. The Virtual Carnival is an amalgamation of the results from all events from all nine divisions that shows how each school performed against the other 77 schools.

Here is where SNC placed, out of 78 ACC schools who competed in the ACC Athletics Carnival:

  • Junior boys - 3rd
  • Junior girls - 14th
  • Senior boys - 2nd (2pts behind Sacred Heart)
  • Senior girls - 43rd
  • Overall girls - 26th
  • Overall boys - 2nd (52 pts behind Sacred Heart)

Overall, St Norbert College Canons were the 5th ranked athletics team in the ACC for 2018 and we are the highest ranked non A-Division school.

On top of this, we had eight athletes selected as part of the ACC Athletics All Star team for 2018. This team is an 'All ACC' honorary team consisting of the best two performers in each event across all divisions of the carnival. Congratulations to the following students (*=number of events):

  • Bob Watson*
  • Lubin Benedict**
  • Thomas Rogers**
  • Caleb Yende-Emoko*
  • MJ Jansen van Rensburg**
  • Connor Chehab*
  • Izeldin Bol*
  • Jordan-Blaze Lightbourn***

Eight athletes from one school was the equal 2nd largest representation by any school, with Sacred Heart leading the way with 12.

From a team and an individual perspective, these results are an absolutely mind-blowing performance that epitomises how good this current crop of athletes are, but also that we wouldn’t look out of place in A-Division. Congratulations to every student who represented the Canons in ACC Athletics this year!
