Australian Science Olympiads

In Term Three, Michael Hegney and Faith Desmond participated in the Australian Science Olympiads for Physics and Biology respectively.

The Australian Science Olympiads are a national program for top performing secondary science students and enables students to participate further in science camps and international competitions based on performance.

Michael earned a Certificate of High Distinction (top 10% of student results) and Faith earned a Certificate of Distinction (top 30%). These are impressive results considering the challenging nature of the Olympiad test papers. Congratulations goes to Michael and Faith for the way in which they proudly represented the College.

Year 11 Forensic Incursion

On Tuesday 16 October, Year 11 Integrated Science students had a Forensic Science incursion. To start the day, students had a visit from John Coumbaros, a forensic scientist from ChemCentre. ChemCentre is a State-run forensic lab located in Curtin University. Mr Coumbaros gave students a real-life insight into the life and work of a forensic scientist. He also gave great information on career pathways for students to follow to embark on a forensic career in the future. Mr Coumbaros gave students the opportunity to try on hazard base suits and gas masks. This is equipment that he would wear if he was approaching a chemical crime scene. He shared many stories of his career experiences and inspired students to achieve more. Following this visit, students were then presented with a fake crime that happened on campus. They were given a scenario, suspects and some evidence. With this they went to their crime scene and collected evidence on site using different collection methods. Students then applied techniques they learnt throughout this Semester to critically analyse who committed the crime. Students had to work in teams and work together to formulate a report of their findings. The Year 11s were engaged in content until the last minute of the day and found the whole experience enjoyable.
